Heroes are people who are admired for their courage and achievements. A hero can be a woman or man, and heroes come in many different shapes and sizes. In the text From My Hero: Extraordinary People on the Heroes Who Inspire Them it says “So we need to be very careful of those we put on a pedestal, and choose only those who embody those qualities that reflect the very best of human nature. But even that is a dangerous game. What do we do with a hero who has done something less than heroic?” I think that this quotes means that we put many heroes on a pedestal who haven’t done things of great courage. For example, my hero would be Harriet Tubman she was an African American woman who helped free enslaved people. Harriet Tubman is a well know individual…

How do you know when you’ve seen a hero before your eyes? Most likely in real life they won’t be wearing a cape or suit that identifies themselves as this well known hero. Realistically you’ve never or even possibly ever will see that kind of hero. Why is it that that kind of hero always seems to be the first thing that pops into one’s mind when the word “hero” is said; that stereotypical hero that always features in movies? We often forget that we’re actually surrounded every single day by heroes. Teachers, firefighters, you name it, are all considered heroes in one or more peoples’ eyes based on the things they’ve done. A hero not only goes beyond their needs and boundaries to help and encourage others, but also have a strong mind set. Heroes can be looked in the eye and show that they will not back down or give in to the defeat of something they’ve put their mind to.…

Heroes have been around for thousands of years, and through all this time, for better or for worse, what they did and what they believed in has relatively stayed the same. The best example of this is the comparison between the ancient Greek hero of Odysseus from The Odyssey, and the medieval English hero of King Arthur from Le Morte D' Arthur. When you first look at these two heroes you see that they are from two completely different times, with different cultures, different ethics, and different social structure. But they still have many similarities which include the support they get from others on their journeys, the adventures they go on, and the portrayal and treatment of women in their stories.…

The term hero has been a source of desire since the beginning of our written history. So much so that the first piece of literature recorded in the english language was that of a hero. Females are usually used as the sidekicks where as males are the ones who are usually used as the big hero. Females are never portrayed as beautiful, smart, strong characters; they are not empowered like men are. For example in Scooby Doo the character Velma is smart but unattractive. Cartoons like Scooby Doo enforce traditional stereotypes, in this case there is a stereotype saying that women cannot be both beautiful and smart at the same time. Like with the Smurfette, she is the only female in the Smurf show and she has blond hair, a dress and according to the Female Action Hero’s article is all too caring, basically meaning that she is just a dumb blonde. Another example is in the popular Powerpuff Girls show, each little girl reflects a common female cartoon stereotype. In this case one is smart, one is sweet, and one is a tomboy. There was an increase in female action heroes in children’s cartoons after they discovered that these shows appealed to young girls not only boys. Shows like sailor moon started airing; however there was still a big amount of stereotypes involved that make these female action heroes somewhat negative role models for younger girls. We are telling girls to take the second seat and let the men be the big hero. In other words men are seen as being superior. The social expectations of women are taken into consideration; a woman cannot possibly do…

Firstly, heroes are, according to Wikipedia, “…characters who, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness, display courage and the will for self-sacrifice, that is, heroism—for some greater good of all humanity,” however according to Word Reference dictionary a hero is, “a person, typically a man, who is admired for their courage or outstanding achievements.” Both sources coincide that a hero needs to be brave. A hero also needs to be smart, strong, lucky and most of the times had an extra ability that made him especial or superior from the other people or in this case characters.
