Hero Definition Essay
What is your definition of a hero? What kinds of things do heroes do that ordinary people do not do? Why do you think they do those things?
When I think of a hero, I think of someone that goes that extra mile to take care of his or her own and others. A hero is someone who is courageous, brave, and fearless. Someone that is not selfish and will do anything needed even if it means that they could get hurt. Heroes do things like charity and volunteering, or they deliver kind acts to strangers without even thinking twice about it. A hero will save a child from drowning, or help someone that is in dire need. Heroes do these things because it is nurturing for them to do these things and not receive anything in return. “Great heroes need great sorrows and burdens, or half their greatness goes unnoticed. It’s all part of the fairytale.” -Peter S. Beagle, The Last Unicorn. Heroes can be found in normal, everyday people; however, they go unnoticed because they did not have to overcome a great calamity to perform an action. More well known heroes have all overcome the worst of situations imaginable. For example, Ms. Riley from October Sky had fought Hodgkin’s Disease while helping Homer and the Rocket Boys achieve their dream. Rainsford from The Most Dangerous Game fought to the death in a game he did not believe in or wanted to participate in. Josh Sundquist became an award winning author and a Paralympian after defeating cancer and having his leg amputated at age nine. A hero is one who is selfless, overcomes adversity, and inspires others.…

How do you know when you’ve seen a hero before your eyes? Most likely in real life they won’t be wearing a cape or suit that identifies themselves as this well known hero. Realistically you’ve never or even possibly ever will see that kind of hero. Why is it that that kind of hero always seems to be the first thing that pops into one’s mind when the word “hero” is said; that stereotypical hero that always features in movies? We often forget that we’re actually surrounded every single day by heroes. Teachers, firefighters, you name it, are all considered heroes in one or more peoples’ eyes based on the things they’ve done. A hero not only goes beyond their needs and boundaries to help and encourage others, but also have a strong mind set. Heroes can be looked in the eye and show that they will not back down or give in to the defeat of something they’ve put their mind to.…

A hero can be someone ordinary that puts himself aside and set others first. The definition of a hero is different for everyone and even though one person may believe a hero must be strong, another may argue they do not have to be strong, but determined. Though there are many ways to define a hero, to be a hero, one must first go through a trial to see what they do when faced with a challenge. Do heroes run when it gets tough or do they stay and risk their life? A hero to most people is someone that wears a cape and a costume, but truly a hero is someone that inspires you and never gives up on whatever obstacle their facing. Just like an everyday hero Ana knows she might not survive the cancer she has, but still has a smile on her face every day. Ana inspires her children and husband to never give up and always be positive. People always look up to heroes because they inspire them to do things that most people can’t accomplish. All people see heroes in a different way, for example a hero could be brave, inspiring, and determined, but a hero can be much more than that. A hero is defined to me as a person who protects people, who is always inspiring to others, and someone who is never selfish and always puts everybody else first.…
