I usually get asked about the three big scratches on my neck about five times a day so I remember the incident like if it was yesterday. The accident occurred when I was eleven. As a child when someone asked me what happened I enjoyed making up stories like I got into a fight with a bear or a tiger attacked me. As I explain the real story I tend to smile and laugh so I think about my accident positively instead of negatively. So what really happened? It was seven years ago, in the sun blazed summer I visited my…

First, diaphragmatic hernias can either be congenital or environmental. Congenital hernias happen due to a problem in the development of the animal embryo. Environmental diaphragmatic hernias are often traumatic and they occur at a larger rate than congenital diaphragmatic hernias do. The condition observed was a traumatic diaphragmatic hernia. A traumatic diaphragmatic hernia occurs when the diaphragm is unsettled to the point that the stomachic organs move up into the chest cavity. Usually, the organs that are moved are the liver, the small intestine, and the stomach. This causes lungs to not be able to expand properly leading to breathing trouble. In contrast, a normal dog would have the chest and the abdominal cavities being separated muscularly which helps breathing. Traumatic diaphragmatic hernias are caused by either a new traumatic event or one that has happened in the past. Younger animals are especially prone to get this condition.…

Obviously no one knows what happened but the doctors told my mother I had “forgotten to wake up” was the line the doctor gave my parents. They said blood had fallen on my vocal cords causing muscle spasms in my throat, making it impossible to breathe virtually closing my throat. After the follow up surgery the doctors brought me to the recovery room and came out to inform my anxious mother and father they could see me now the follow up was a success. My mother heard my shrieks from the end of the hall since the anesthesia had worn off, she now smelled blood and vomit all over me. I knew I was just happy to see the face of my mother not all those doctors I didn’t recognize. The doctors said I didn’t vomit but later contradicted themselves claiming I…

I looked around and I wasn’t in my room anymore, I was in the hospital during my grandpa’s surgery. The waiting room was cold and sterile and the smell of antiseptic was so strong I could taste it. Waves of uneasiness washed over me as if they were trying to drown me. My grandma and my mother were sitting in the room with me and they looked just as scared. I remembered how long my grandpa was in surgery to get his windpipe removed, how I had thought that I wouldn’t make it through the hours he was and that if he didn’t then I wouldn’t make it for much longer afterward.…

At the time that I was in the hospital, I was eight years old. I went under anesthesia so many times to endure endoscopies, I had blood drawn too many times to count, and at one point in time I had countless IV's in both arms. This didn't gross me out, almost everything about it interested me. Granted this was not a great experience, it will always remain in my memory because this was when I realized, there was nothing that I desired more than becoming a surgeon.…

When I woke up I didn't know what happened or where I was at the moment until the nurse told me when she woke me up and telling me that my surgery is all done and it went really well! I really don't remember much but I know I started to laugh when I saw a really big brace that started from my upper thigh all the way down to my ankle. It was really big and really heavy! I was out of the hospital a few minutes later after they took my vitals to make sure I was okay and all set to go home. Getting out of the bed was the worst part, imagine being really tired and loopy from the anesthesia and trying to lift your leg with a really big, heavy brace on your leg. On the way home I slept for the most part until I woke up and told my mom I wanted some chicken nuggets because I was starving from not eating all night and day. I got my chicken nuggets and went back to sleep.…

I remember crying in my father’s lap, sobbing, saying I didn’t want to do it. The nurse came over to me and said Do you think you could you drink this for me? What is it? I asked. It's sugar water he replied. I drank it so fast not realizing how bad sugar and water could taste mixed together. The next thing I remember was a woman coming to my bed asking me about colors. She said I could pick three. I saw my two favorite colors neon pink and dark purple and I knew those were the ones. Those are the colors I’ll spend the next three months looking at as I am bound to a hospital bed with a metal bar between my legs. I was six years old.…

Life was going to dramatically change as the nurses rolled me into the operating room. Back surgery is an invasive operation as it is, but imagine it in the eyes of a thirteen-year-old girl. The surgeons explained the procedure as a spinal fusion, with titanium rods placed along both sides of my spine for stability. This procedure would correct my scoliosis. Afterward, the pain was more than anyone should endure. I was not allowed to twist or bend, and I was unable to dress myself, or leave the house alone. This was difficult to accept, as I didn’t want to become dependent upon others.…

It was in the middle of 2nd grade when I had a headache and felt really nauseous. My parents thought it might not be serious until they saw the blood in my stool when I was using the bathroom. My parents rushed me to the emergency room. They were scared and I heard my mom crying loud as a dying whale. A Couple minutes later, I heard the doctor saying that I had ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic, inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation in the digestive tract. The doctors told me that I had to go to with the symptom my entire life. I thought in my head “ How will I survive this” and “who will help go through this”. That it when I realized that my family will always be at my side by helping in my hard times and giving me the encouraging words that “ I can do it”.…
