Herman Daly: Article Analysis
Herman Daly was a professor that argued that it is not possible for limitless growth in physical production to determine an economy (Wheeler, 2014). In my opinion is that he is right because nothing is endless much less materials that are used to produce other things. There can be an exception to that if you recycle, which those materials can be used again and again to make different products that are then sometimes thrown away and return to the recycling circle of junk. Daly talks about growthmania as being kind of like a hoarder or greed. Both of those have a similar meaning in the way that that can both have something but then want to obtain more of it because “there is no such thing as enough, that cannot conceive of too much of a good thing” (Wheeler, 2014). Too much growth can eventually be costly and have a negative effect on the economy instead of a positive one. He was looking for a way to maintain “steady-state economy”, which is minimizing the population and wealth and keeping it a constant steady rate (Wheeler, 2014). …show more content…
For example, the more shoes we buy then the more trees will be cut down to make the shoe boxes. If the trees were the home to some type of animal, which died when the tree was being cut down then it cannot eat the bugs that it was supposed to and now the world will have a bit more of those bugs that could be harmful to humans. , All of this because we bought a pair of shoes that we did not really need. And that is called the circle of life. Humans are part of nature too and like all other creatures in this world we have needs and instincts. Part of our instinct is to build a shelter out of whatever we can find in order to survive. Thus, cities are a part of nature which are called granite gardens (Wheeler,

In all honesty, prior to reading Jake Helpern’s articles and meeting him in person, I thought he was some older white guy with a slightly boring style of writing as well as being even more boring in person, but somehow everyone else finds his work fascinating. But since I needed some extra credit points, I took on the challenge of the assignment. Glad to announce my notions of Jake Helpern were totally wrong. Reading Jake Helpern’s articles were like reading a well written novel. His stories had flare, suspense, character, drama and even a touch of sorrow and empathy. For the most part his articles were not just engaging but also very informative. Content versus Form, Content wins.…

Vincent M. Southerland and Jody Kent Lavy write about their take on sentencing children to life in prison without parole and why it's wrong. Throughout the article the authors have you thinking about how cruel and harsh of a sentence life in prison is for children. A good argument the two authors make is that “young people are more susceptible to peer pressure than adults, and less capable of thinking through the consequences of their actions and assessing risks”. Through this statement the authors point out the physiologically a child doesn't have fair judgment. When adults are sentenced to life in prison their brains have already matured and should fully understand the difference between right and wrong, but children are still in the process…

The articles I read cover the effects of race and economic areas on marriage rates and marriage decline. In the first article, Ecological Areas and Marriage Rates, author James Bossard discusses how the economic prosperity of areas in a city has an influence on marriage rates. In his 1928 study, Bossard conducted research on 20,000 married men throughout different parts of Philadelphia, which was the US’s 3rd largest city at the time. Data was collected from the Philadelphia Marriage License Bureau and nearby bureaus. The rates were calculated by the amount of men who were married during the study per 1,000 men who were single, widowed, or divorced in the area. An important factor taken into account was age difference. Findings showed that…

As Christina Baldwin said: “ Journal writing is a voyage to the interior”. These journals not only symbolize my opinions about certain topics such as religion, gun control... but also represents me in every word and sentence written. I never thought that writing journals could arise so many emotions inside me while being so fun. Even though I wrote journals in GS100, the topics of this semester were more interesting. It developed my interest since we started writing the first journal. During this period, I realized that this experience not only made me grow up as a person but also as a writer.…

In Will Haygood's article, "Kentucky town of Manchester illustrates [a] national obesity crisis" which focuses on local families and how living in such a small town can take a toll on one's physical activity and appearance. Haygood writes this article to notify non-locals of the issue and to help make the town healthier and more aware of obesity. In his article, he essentially claims obesity rates are at their all-time high because of the lack of healthy foods, parks and recreation, and knowledge. While his argument is convincing, he could still provide a clear thesis, focus, and logical arguments to support his article.…
