Herman Boone Speech Analysis
Herman Boone was a highly successful and respected high school football coach. His most successful years were in 60s and 70s. He is probably best known for his 1971 season.
That was his first year coaching at T.C. Williams High school. Tensions were high, because the school district had just became integrated. Racism was a huge problem in Alexandria, Virginia, consequently, this lead to complicated times trying to bring the team together. In an effort to bond the team, Coach Boone took them to Gettysburg. This is where he delivered the speech I have chosen to analyze.
Point one: Upon arrival he stated, “This is where they fought the Battle of Gettysburg. Fifty thousand men died right here on this field, fightin’ the same fight that we're still

Many strong speeches are given in the movie Remember the Titans. Two of the best speeches in the whole movie are given by Coach Boone to his football team composed of both black and white players. As the coach, it is his responsibility to do everything in his power to make his team look past this and come together to make the most of their difficult situation. In Remember The Titans, the whites in America are the dominant race. As mentioned above, at the beginning of the film, TC Williams high school is an all white school until the blacks are newly immigrated into the high school. The football team, specifically, was dominated by white players and coaches. However, when the african american Coach Boone is transferred to T. C. from North Carolina to help coach, things seem to change drastically for the team and the town. To the african american community, Coach Boone is seen as as a voice for not only african american athletes searching for their opportunity to play football for the team, but for the african american’s across the community. On the other hand, when Coach Boone is hired as head coach…

It is interesting that Chavez chooses to address Mexican Americans about the misuse of the Church’s funding because they themselves probably do not have much to offer. If his audience does not have much monetary support to offer him, then is his ideal audience too far removed from reality or is this intentional? If this is intentional, he is using his audience to prove that it is not so much about the finances of the people, but how the people of the Church use the money they do have. He must not be saying to give more money, or if he is, then he will probably not be as successful as if he were speaking to a different demographic. Therefore, he must be advocating for the people to spend the Church’s money more wisely and to stop tolerating the passivity of the Catholic Diocese when it comes to social justice.…

Respected, strong and intelligent, three great synonyms for Remember the Titans’ Coach Herman Boone, yet like the rest of race, he was not always treated as an equal. Throughout the film Coach Boone deals with many everyday struggles, yet his responses deliver a very important lesson. Early in the film when the team is boarding the bus for camp, Coach Boone faces a problem when Gary demands half of the team to be white and states they “don’t need any of his people on defense”, referring to the black students. This is the first time that the audience sees how Coach Boone stands for disrespect and discrimination as he proceeds to humiliate Gary and his friend, establishing the respect he demands, in front of their peers, by repeating that he…

I saw Coach Boone as strong student affairs professional. His actions and position could very well reflect that of a college coach, instructor, or dean in current times or days past. He embraced his role as a coach but also as a role model whose responsibility was not only to win games but to develop the young men on his team into productive members of their community. From the beginning, he stressed the importance of being “one”. Taking players from diverse background, religions, and race and attempting to help them realize they are different but still the same is a difficult task, especially in the civil rights era in which the movie takes place. Coach Boone resembles Abraham Lincoln’s leadership traits by influencing the players through storytelling of experiences to help see the grand idea (Phillips, 155). Coach Boone attempts to create the obvious lesson of Gettysburg to the players’ current situation by making a midnight run to the battlefield. By telling the story of the battle, Coach Boone is using the results of the past to hopefully dictate the events of the future.…

This is during the camp at Gettysburg High School. Boone is telling everyone to get to know each other. And until then they would move to three practices a day. This afternoon, after a long training Gerry bumped into Julius and they start talking about themselves, Julius is saying that he is not going to start playing as a team until Ray starts to block. Gerry then says that Julius has the worst attitude he has ever heard. Julius responds saying, "Attitude reflects leadership captain." This is an important part of the film because this has made Gerry really think about how he is leading the team. This coveys the message that we all get so few opportunities for advancement in life, and if we do not take and make the most of them, we are undoubtedly going to live to regret it. You can tell this is an important part of the film because of the way they use a close-up of Gerry and Julius' faces. This was also a signpost for later on in the film where Rays gets kicked off the team for not blocking. In summary, Julius shows Gerry how to be a better leader by showing him what it looks…

The battle of Gettysburg was the turning point of the bloody war between the states in favor of the north. The battle over states rights, mainly the right to keep slaves, had finally peaked in July of 1863. Lincoln knew that he had to say something to inspire his troop to go on. He said that eighty-seven years ago, or as Lincoln affectionately refers to it, four score and seven, the four fathers were dedicated to the idea that all men were created equal, not just white, male landowners. He states that the Civil War tested weather a nation with the standards and principals of the United States would make it. He dedicates the ground that the solders died on the great battle which they had just fought and stated that the solders would not be buried, but instead left were they fell in battle. Lincoln then tell the troops not the let the brave men who died's deaths to have been in vein. He then says that the country shall have a new birth of freedom and that the United…
