WHAT: is YOUR response to the poem? * 3. WHAT: is the poem about? Try and sum up the main idea of the poem in one or two sentences. * 4. WHO: is speaking in this poem? is the poet speaking in the poem? Is it someone else, real or imagined? Is the poet speaking to you? Are they reflecting? Addressing the world in general? Are there any other voices in the poem? * 5. HOW: does the poem get its message across? LOOK What does the poem look like? What is its SHAPE- verse, blocks, across the page, short lines, long lines Why does shape play a part in the message? Why would the poet select the shape? * 6. HOW: does the poem get its message across? SOUND Imagery (poetic devices)- what are the main images used? What makes them striking? What specific devices have been used (SPAMROD)? Diction- think carefully about word choice. Mood-think about feelings. * 7. WHY: do you think the poet wrote this poem? How does the poet feel about the reader? Are you asked to be involved? Are you meant to learn from the poem? Are you given a message? Is the poet’s message clear? 8. WHAT: is YOUR response to the poem? How did you react to the poem? Did it move you? Does it make you think of the issue more in depth? Feelings? Is the poem effective?
