Similes & Metaphors
Thanksgiving:

My family is like a Thanksgiving Buffet
My mother is a Jello Salad, wobbly and sure,
But too sweet and familiar to resist.
My father is like a dish of potatoes, slightly overcooked
Firm, unyielding, and comforting all at once.
My Sister is a sweet potato casserole,
A little bit of her goes a long way.
My brother is the mystery salad on the end of the buffet
Nobody is sure what is in it, so they mostly just leave it alone.
My family is like a Thanksgiving Buffet.

Limericks
Art Cat Greebo

An artistic male cat called Greebo
To an evening he decided to go
The teacher said “That’s not right
Your page is all white!”
Greebs said, “It is a polar bear in the snow.”

Blackpool

There was a young man from Blackpool
Who wouldn’t drink booze as a rule
For he once had a beer
And fell off of the pier
Which made him feel somewhat a fool.

Alliteration
Dan & His Dog

Dan has a dog that likes to swim and help many people
One fine evening Dan’s phone rang, someone was drowning in the Diver Dam
Quickly Dan grabbed his dog and drove to Divers Dam to save the person
Dan’s dog dove deep in the Dam, drinking dirty water as he dove
Dan’s dog rose with Dave on his back, everyone is glad to see him alive
Dan’s dog became known as the town’s life guard.

Onomatopoeia
Samuel’s Water

Samuel needed to go get water from the town’s pond
He grabs the bucket and starts his walk
The pond is in a bowl looking hole, Samuel strides down to the water
Sam fills the bucket he got up with water and started up the hill.
He reaches the top and slip, SPLISH-SPLASH the water falls down
Sam lost all his water and never made the same mistake again.

Sonnet
This Poem Is off Topic

Post a reply so iced and cold this woeful winter morn
This slate of earth beneath trembles and quakes
This humbled man before you lying torn
When great stone monuments yield

I represent a juxtaposition of seemingly opposite views in two poems: The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls, and A Psalm of Life. In Tide Rises we see the washing away of evidence that one has lived and passed this way, yet in Psalm of Life, he uses foot prints in the \"sands of time\" that are not washed away but remain to remind us of great men who passed this way. \"Lives of great men all remind us / we can make our lives sublime / and departing leave behind us / footprints in the sands of time....then he tells how these footprints can lift and elevate a \"forlorn\" brother who may have lost his way. It\'s true that we all are just passing through this earth life, and as the generations keep coming, we will pass into obscurity with only the remnants of our having been here being our name on a grave marker, or a family pedigree chart...UNLESS we choose to do something that leaves our mark on the world. Write your book. Paint your pictures. Compose your music. If those arent\' your talents then write your life story. Put it in a book format. Leave a legacy of your life\'s lessons. I did this very thing so I won\'t be forgotten. Mine is STRUMMING ON HEART STRINGS: THROUGH DOORS OF ONE WOMAN\'S JOURNEY. My friends, leave footprints that \"the little waves, with their soft, white hands\" cannont \"Efface the footprints in the sands...\" Even though we\'re here for a brief time, our lives matter. Before the tide\'s soft, white hands begin messing with your footprints, determine your legacy...write your life into the annals of history, even if it\'s just your family history. You may be the salvation of a grandchild or great grandchild. Read A Psalm of Life to feel the impact of what I\'m…

    Farewell to Arms

Throughout high school, relationships come up left and right. With those relationships, tension is just waiting to come, fights already starting. War is just the same, fight after fight until someone dies, or gets hurt. In “A Farewell to Arms”, Frederick Henry is in a similar relationship that is being torn apart by war with Catherine Barkley. Frederick Henry is an ambulance driver who is at the front in a relationship with Catherine, a British nurse. At the front, their relationship short, and horrid, while away, their relationship flourishes. This change in Frederick Henry’s relationship shows Ernest Hemingway’s thematic message that war is dehumanizing, and ruins your life.…

Money plays an interesting role in the novel, Goodbye to Berlin. The 1930’s Berlin society places a large emphasis on social standing based on money, though, ironically, the people who have it don’t deserve it and the pursuit of money tears people apart. Isherwood gives us a closer look on just how significant money is by peering into the lives of several different people, all of different social situations and showing how each of them is affected by the pursuit of it.…

A Farewell To Arms is a classic book written by Ernest Hemingway which is about a man named Frederic Henry, who is in the middle of a warzone. Frederic Henry is an existentialist and an American ambulance driver in Italy during WW1. Frederic is what Hemingway calls a “code hero”. Hemingway created a code for each hero whom he created in his novels. The typical Hemingway hero is a detached existentialist who shows bravery in the face of a violent world. Three characteristics that show how Frederic is a code hero are that he bears his miseries well in public, lives in a violent world, and nighttime is difficult for him.…

    I and Thou

In part 2 of I And Thou, Martin Buber examines, and begins to criticize, society’s debilitating inability to provide purpose and meaning to an individual’s life. According to Buber, “It is the obstacle; for the development of the ability to experience and use comes about mostly through the decrease of man’s power to enter into relation…”(Buber 48). In a short translation, there is an inverse relationship between the development of society (and scientific progress) and a sense of fellowship and spiritual unity between individuals. This estrangement and lack of moral responsibility leads to spiritual isolation, and an incapability to form a successful community.…

Every man has a feel of duty to his country and has a sense of warfare to protect his land. At the same time a man has his desires which can be as meaningless as a car or as important as the love of his life. In the novel A Farewell To Arms, Frederick Henry is stuck in the conflict of choosing to follow his sense of duty or follow his heart. Those two forces are pulling on Henry so hard that he is about to be torn apart.…

Hemingway had a very interesting message throughout A Farewell to Arms. Hemingway’s message is that in both love and war there is loss and an end to everything. The end cannot be avoided and will happen eventually, so enjoy the good things you have while you have them, but when that time ends you must move on. Hemingway himself had to face this reality in his personal life with the pain of four marriages, eleven concussions, death of family members and many more traumatic events. Hemingway’s personal grievances are reflected all throughout the novel. Lt. Henry is faced with many obstacles and deals with them the same way each time. When he faces death in the war he buries his pain and moves on. When he realizes he will never see his friends again, he moves on. When he loses the love of his life, he moves on. Lt. Henry is always moving on waiting for the next thing to happen until he finally reaches the end. His love came to an end when Catherine died, and he accepted that. In the war, he dealt with multiple deaths every single day and he became immune to the pain that would cause a normal civilian. All of these things ended one way or another and it could not be avoided. But, during the time that he did have good things, like Catherine in his life, he had to enjoy them. This message still somewhat holds significance in 2013 today. Things do still have to come to an end nowadays and there is no stopping it. There is still war, and that brings numerous amounts of loss. But, we have to move on with our lives even with those people gone. And in love there is still loss, people get their heart broken every single day, but life does go on afterward. And one day we will come to an end and there is no way for us to stop it. We just have to accept that fact and move on. Hemingway definitely shed a light on the harsh realities of love and war and what it does to our…
