This is a study done to examine the cognitive rationalization amongst undergraduate students that either use tanning beds or used to use tanning beds. Despite the rising skin cancer rates and the direct correlation between indoor tanning and melanoma, tanning beds are still a popular cosmetic tool amongst young adults. Cognitive dissonance can assist in explaining the role in cognitive rationalizations. Cognitive dissonance occurs when an individual has to conflicting beliefs or behaviors. An example of this that is applicable to this topic would be when someone knows that tanning may cause them to have skin cancer. However they choose to believe that they will not get skin cancer because they do not burn. Therefore they continue to tan. Skincancer.org is a website that contains a lot of information about melanoma. This includes melanoma warning signs, causes and risk factors, prevention guidelines, types, stages, and treatments. In order to be informed enough on the topic of skin cancer, I need to know about the disease, and not just the causes of melanoma and why people voluntarily do something that will possibly cause themselves harm.
