In the past decade digital technology has resulted in massive social changes that have affected nearly every aspect of society. How has digital technology evolved and changed? What has triggered these changes? How have these changes impacted the various people, institutions and policies within society? Has technology impacted society in a positive or negative manner?
You are a social scientist. Create a five-minute video “rant” (in the style of Rick Mercer) aimed at high school and university students to better inform them about the effects of digital technology. Your goal is to understand the effects of digital technology on youth culture through the lens of one (or more) of the three social sciences and create a video demonstrating that understanding. Your rant should be creative, entertaining, informative, and organized so that viewers will have a better understanding of the effects of digital technology on society and their lives.
Standards of Quality
Your product must meet the following standards of quality:
the video must be professionally edited with music, images, and speaking (you should be talking and not typing your information) the video must examine the effects of digital technology through the lens of sociology, psychology, and/or anthropology (use at least 3-4 social science theories or theorists to analyze these effects) be at least 3-4 minutes in length
include your personal beliefs and examples about the effects of digital technology (take a stand on the effects of digital technology and don’t try to be objective) overall, the video must answer the following questions (there are no right or wrong answers): In what ways do advances in digital technology shape, influence and reflect society? How will digital technology affect/shape/influence the future? What would each of the three disciplines and theorists say about digital technology and its results, effects, benefits, and drawbacks?
Mr. Wiskin’s Comments (since I can’t explain things in person):
My goal for this unit summative was to take what we had learned about technology (through our Digital Nation discussion), culture (Lost Generation discussion), and psychology, sociology, and anthropology (though our textbook) and combine them into one creative activity.
I wanted you to create a rant (if you don’t feel comfortable being on screen you can create a video using iMovie or another program…you don’t have to be on screen, but your voice does) because it is more creative, entertaining and enjoyable to watch and share (we will share with each other) than a simple essay. We could even post these to YouTube if you want. I think that would be awesome, having a global audience for our ideas about technology. But we’ll decide that later.
The overall aim for this project is for you to answer the questions, “In what ways do advances in digital technology shape, influence and reflect society? How will digital technology affect/shape/influence the future?” and “What would each of the three disciplines and theorists say about digital technology and its results, effects, benefits, and drawbacks?” The first question is personal in nature and there is no right or wrong answer. I want you to share your personal beliefs about digital technology, whether you think it is good or bad, or somewhere in between, and explain how digital technology has affected/shaped/influenced society for better or worse. The second question asks you to apply your learning from your textbook. You are free to find additional theories and theorists if you wish. But overall, use 3-5 theories and/or theorists to examine these effects through the lens of soc, psych, and/or anthro. You should be applying your general knowledge of these three social sciences to a real-world application—digital technology.
Digital technology is a huge topic so you probably should focus on...
