PROGRAMME NOTES
Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)

Sonata No.52 in E flat major, Hob. XVI: 52, first movement: Allegro

The Piano Sonata in E flat major, H. 16/52, written in 1794, was dedicated to Therese Jansen, a leading pianist in London who had studied with Clementi. It is often described as Haydn's finest work in the genre and is the last of Haydn's piano sonatas. It gives evidence not only of Jansen's formidable technique, but of the more powerful sonority of the English piano in comparison to its German and Austrian counterparts.

It is written in sonata-form and starts with some thick chords to introduce the first motive, which make the texture become more complicated. Followed by transition passage, the second motive is livelier and detached which distinct with the first motive. The piece connects with long gorgeous quick thirty-second notes and also, sudden rest, contrasting dynamics and forceful accent (forzando) are used to add more interest into the piece.

This piece is based on a legend. The first chord of the piece is made up of sonorous Gs and Ds. It was published in 1910 as the tenth prelude in Debussy’s first of two volumes of twelve piano preludes each. Ludwig Van Beethoven 's Quasi Una Fantasia, later named and more famously known as The Moonlight Sonata, is a piano piece that can be portrayed and analyzed in a multitude of ways. The piece was published in 1801, during a period of great experimentation in Beethoven 's music. This can help explain how the piece addresses a broad range of emotions that vary from romance to frustration to anger. The first movement is full of all of those feelings and more, however it is the pianist who decides which of them will triumph over the rest. Pianists do so through techniques using musical aspects such as tempo, dynamics, accents, and syncopation to name a few. This paper will discuss four different interpretations of the first movement of the Moonlight Sonata performed by a diverse range of musicians. The musicians include German classical pianist, Wilhelm Kempff, American piano legend, Wladziu Valentine Liberace, contemporary jazz pianist, Lenny Marcus and myself, an amateur pianist.…

There are several main characteristics that identify this prelude as a romantic piece. The most obvious one is that it is a prelude by Chopin, who was a composer from the Romantic period. The dynamic and expressive markings both on the sheet and in performed interpretations are very pronounced, especially in the melody which is the main emphasis - the left hand (or right hand in the start of section B) is meant just as an accompaniment, but must still be expressive, articulated and provide just as much emotion as the melodic line. The accompaniment is complex and uses arpeggios and chords while maintaining the…

Frederic Chopin was a Polish composer and pianist who lived from 1810 to 1849. He wrote hundreds of pieces, with almost everything he wrote being exclusively for the piano. He had his own unique poetic and lyrical style; his songs could be light and dreamy and yet dark and emotional at the same time. Known as "The Poet of the Piano", he is still considered the most important composer from the Romantic period, and no one before or since has contributed as many significant works to the piano 's repertoire, or come closer to capturing its essence as he.…

Robert Alexander Schumann was a German Romantic composer and music critic who lived from 8 June 1810 to 29 July 1856. He composed this piece in 1842, also known as his ‘Chamber Music Year.’ Schumann had never written a chamber work until this year except an early piano quartet in 1829. However, in 1842, he composed the Three String Quartets Op. 41, the Piano Quintet Op.44, the Piano Quartet Op.47 and a piano trio, which became the Fantasiestuke Op. 88 later on. This Piano Quartet is also known as the ‘creative double’ of the Piano Quintet and is less known then its other significant half. He began writing this Quartet on October 24 1842; finished it within a month then was first published in 1845.…
