Heightism
Title: Analytical factsheet on prejudice and discrimination on heightism
Section I Heightism is a problem that affects a large group of people that share a common physical trait. Height is mostly genetics and is largely out of our control. Yet short individuals are being discriminated against in many areas of their lives. As fellow human beings witnessing this unfair treatment, it is only right that we do something about it. We will be looking at the causes of heightism as well as what we can do to reduce it.
Section II From (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heightism), “Heightism is a form of discrimination based on height. It can refer to the treatment of either unusually short or tall people.” It is one of the most overlooked forms of discrimination which is prevalent around the world. We are aware of racism but it is time we look at heightism. This essay will focus on the various areas where forms of height discrimination can exist. A common stereotype can be best described as the Napoleon complex. It is an inferiority complex said to affect some people because of their height. According to (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napoleon_complex), “It is named after the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte who is believed to have overcompensated for his short height by seeking power, war and conquest.” Leaders who are small in stature are sometimes being made fun of acting aggressively because they are insecure about their height. As for taller people who display similar behaviour, they are merely being confident and assertive. Ellen Frankel says “A determined tall person is often admired, but a determined shorten person is often said to have a Napoleon complex.” ( 'Heightism ' the last Prejudice)

Section III One of the causes of heightism, according to (Heightism - The Last Bastion of Discrimination, by Joe Mangano, May 2002) is that “helplessness and weakness are associated with being small or short. It is natural to associate lack

It seems only natural that athletes would see him as a “waste of height,” but the real advantages of size in today’s world are not on the basketball court. “I like being tall,” he said. “If I had to choose a height, I’d probably go with 6’4. I’d still be taller than almost everyone, but wouldn’t have to special order clothes and all that.” Finding 34x38 jeans is no simple task in most department stores. Why do tall people like being tall? Or why do shorter people wish they were taller? When little things like finding pants and reaching the top shelf are taken out of the equation, what seems to be left is an instinctual tendency to trust or respect a taller person compared to people who may be similar in every other…

Everyone has been singled out for one reason or another at least once in their life which makes it easy to understand where Trudeau is coming from. After reading this article, one might think that Trudeau simply needs tougher skin. It’s been known that kids can be cruel but it’s a parent’s responsibility to reassure their young that they are just as good as anyone else. It seems as though Trudeau’s father was aware of the situation and though he embraced and comforted him, no reconstructing words were said. Compared to the much more serious problems other kids face, in different countries or even our own, height being the least of them, it seems as if Trudeau needed to just ‘get over it’. In Trudeau’s mind, his height was the root of all that was wrong in his life. Not realizing that when a problem gets resolved, a new one presents itself. Digging deeper into this article, Trudeau’s actions and emotions can be easily compared to, say a recovering addict. Even though he can’t go back to being short, the past still has an emotional hold on him and every time he is reminded of it, he breaks down a bit, builds himself back up, and carries on. In a way, this article teaches us compassion and understanding. People may have similar problems to one another, however they surely have different ways of coping. No one knows the next person’s struggle but having mercy upon them will ensure the same in return, should the table be turned.…

Before the Agricultural Revolution, larger bodies were seen as more beautiful and normative because food sources were always limited. This then shifted as food became more available to everyone and the standard of beauty shifted to smaller, more petite bodies. These notions that smaller bodies are more superior or more deserving of respect is extremely sizeist though. Body size in relation to race has always been a huge problem, mostly lying between white and nonwhite women. The standard of beauty is seen as small, petite, and fair skin, which is highly noticeable when looking at today’s fashion marketing. One does not typically see black, curvy bodies in high fashion. Not only is there an ideal for small women, but so too for curvy…
