Due to our chaotic lives in school and at work we often neglect in getting the adequate amount of sleep at night. Proper amount of sleep helps with our growth, development and function. It is imperative the public becomes aware of the general health benefits and side effects of adequate and inadequate sleep.
Overview
The goal of Healthy People 2020 is to educate the public on how the right amount sleep of sleep at night improves health, productivity, wellness, quality of life and safety on roads and in workplace. (Heathy People 2020) The major issues that Healthy People 2020 have to face are in the increase of time being spent away from home, which incurs in lack of adequate sleep. (Spilsbury JC, Storfer-Isser A, Kirchner HL, et al 2006) Left untreated, SDB in children is associated with difficulties in school, metabolic disorders, and future heart disease risk. • SDB in Older Adults:
SDB may affect 20 to 40 percent of older adults and, if left untreated, is associated with a 2- to 3-fold increased risk of stroke and mortality. (Redline S, Yenokyan G, Gottlieb DJ, et al 2010) (Punjabi NM, Caffo BS, Goodwin JL, et al 2009)
Management Inadequate sleep occurs within 25 percent of U.S. adults, roughly 15 out of every 30 days adults report insufficient sleep or rest. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Epidemiology Program Office 2009) The awareness of sleep health education and promotion strategies are desperately needed to address the importance of sleep health across age, race, education, and socioeconomic groups. (Healthy People 2020) In awareness of sleep health education programs implemented can increase awareness of common sleep disorders, such as insomnia, restless leg syndrome, and SDB. (Healthy People 2020) Sleep health education programs are much needed in workplaces, where they can educate and promote better work schedules and motivate their employees to reframe from working longer hours and therein reduce the risk to health and safety.
