Healthcare-Associated Infections
Healthcare-associated infections are infections affecting the patients while they are receiving treatment for medical or surgical conditions in the healthcare setting such as hospitals, community clinics, long-term care facilities, dialysis centers or outpatient surgical centers, and others. They are the most common complication of clinical setting, they affect 4% of patients.
There are many types of healthcare-associated infections such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE), Central Line-associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI), Clostridium difficile Infection (C. difficile), and Surgical Site Infection (SSI) (CDPH, 2016).

Quality improvement organizations are working as local leaders, practicing efforts to support the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ National Quality Strategy and board national healthcare improvement goals such as decreasing healthcare associated infections, decreasing mortality rate due to heart attack and stroke, expanding the use of electronic medical record, and improving preventive care.
