Unit 50118195.CU1531- Engage in personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings.
1.1 Describe the duties and responsibilities of own work role.
I work with clients with Autism and/or a learning disability, within a supported housing setting. My current job role is as a ‘care assistant’. I am responsible for providing support to the service user’s, which includes: personal care, assisting with meal preparation, assisting with medication, organising service user finances, assisting with meal planning and maintaining records.
The main purpose of my work is to assist and work alongside clients in their own homes and in the community, helping those clients to access and take part in a full range of community activities. It is my duty to enable clients to acquire and practise everyday living skills, to help make full use of the community resources and facilities and to help provide the personal care and supervision required by individual clients.
I received an induction training course when I first joined the company, which provided specialised training relating to the learning disability sector. I receive regular supervision with the house manager where I can discuss any problems, and get support. I can also request training, and my manager can highlight areas where I would benefit from further training in. I attend regular refresher courses in training, so that I am up to date with the current standards required for my role. I treat all service users with respect and dignity, and my work practices reflect and promote equal opportunities. I have read, and understand my Company’s policies and procedures, and am aware of what to do in most circumstances, and the correct reporting/recording procedures to follow. I always work in a professional manner, and ensure all service user information is kept up to date, and confidential.

This has resulted in a low staff because the staff are paid low wages, work long hours and a lack of training that results in service users health needs not be completely met. A contradiction in the 'valuing People' principle of all adults with learning disabilities having the same rights as the rest of the population under the Human Rights Act 1986 (Department of Health 2011 online). The recent development of supported living meets many of the principles in 'valuing people' white paper including Human Rights but there are still…

For my first placement I was placed at Kaylra aged care facility in McLaren Vale. This facility is a modern 39-bed with both high and low care support. Being situated in McLaren Vale, I knew before my placement the makeup of the population consisted of various difference ages, races, genders and religion. Once I began my placement I discovered that the average age of people living in McLaren Vale is 47 years old, and elderly couples 15.4% of people living in McLaren Vale. It was evident that Kaylra has a targeted population of elderly people. My community placement addressed the needs of those older in the population and needed assistance to be able to care for themselves. My community placement is an essential part in society as the people…

    Assignment On Safeguarding

Training is continually updated and assessed to ensure continued personal and professional development. Supervisions should be available to practitioners as it is a support system and a good source for advice and expertise. Supervisions ensure that any personal concerns about team members can be brought forward to the attention of the manager practicing whistle blowing policies. For example, staff member A has a one on one supervision meeting with the team manger, where a disclosure is made referring to a colleague’s inappropriate use of communication with a service user. The manager can then record and report the incident internally or to the external agencies if safeguarding needs to be informed and also address effective communication with the relevant staff member during a supervision session (Flynn and Starns, 2004). All staff members are trained in autism awareness, positive behavioral techniques and communication skills these are vital aspects when working with children with ASD and are used effectively in order to carry out person centered care plans that are tailored to individual needs. For example, a child with ASD who is a non verbal speaker may benefit more from a visual person centered plan. Individuals are risk assessed and assigned a staff team when in the home or in the community for example a service user who needs two to one support in the home, may need four to one support in the community. The effectiveness of DOL’s allows staff to safeguard children and young people within the law. If a safeguarding issue occurs the individuals risk assessment is reviewed and updated with the new behavior recommendation implemented into the care plan. The whistle blowing policy, in place to protect staff may prove ineffective if personal friendships or people who are related are working together in care teams. Further, colleagues can effect this policy in workplaces with…

I have had work experience during school, college and voluntary work of different areas of the health sector. During this time I worked with young children and individuals with mental health conditions, this was exciting to see how different service users use different ways to communicate to each other and how the service workers had to use different techniques to help individuals in different activities. These experiences have given me a real and practical understanding some of the challenges a mental health support worker has to contend with, but also a great sense of satisfaction to be found in caring for patients and being able to help them to achieve some balance in their day-to-day life and to maintain their…
