Health Science CO-Observation Report
Fueled by my passion for medicine and science, I decided to pursue the Health Science CO-OP at my school. This was an accelerated program where students completed a six-week work experience placement and subsequently completed academic courses. The program consisted of a rigorous curriculum that required proficient critical thinking and analyzing skills. Furthermore, the program was very intellectually challenging as I conducted interdisciplinary labs between biology and chemistry that complemented the theory taught in class. These labs were challenging because I was required to apply the conceptual knowledge of the theory in order to get satisfactory results in the labs. Additionally, these labs were followed by lab reports with the expectation

I think it is very beneficial for medical students because it provides them with an opportunity to work ahead of traditional preparation and to gain as much clinical experience as possible. I believe that I will be successful in the Shared Discovery Curriculum because I am consistent, hardworking and strategic. Consistency is a very important part of success. During the next session, Kasten should continue to work on articulation of /s/ sounds with ES, focusing on phonetic placement, and making E.S more comfortable with correct speech sounds. Kasten appeared to be a good clinician. However, at times I think she was a little too picky in her assessment of E.S’s pronunciations. Being that this was such a long session for an eight year old, in future sessions I suggest more breaks during transitions. Lastly, I recommend more competition based games between Kasten and E.S; it will be a great way to get E.S to work hard, and strive to do her best during…

Those in the healthcare profession are respected, hardworking individuals who went above and beyond to prove themselves capable of helping others in the greatest way possible. My career goals are very straightforward. I’ve taken several steps in high school to accomplish these goals by being well disciplined in my studies, and participating in a Health Careers Internship Program. This program offers me a variety of opportunities that make me a more applicable in a healthcare setting. I’ve learned how to build a strong résumé and cover letter, and how do professional interviews well. We also get the chance to observe and participate in a medical environment. I’ll be shadowing with Dr. Steve Carr at Northern Star Therapy and learn the basics of physical therapy. I’ve done also done volunteer work in a Geriatric setting, at the St. Benedict nursing home in St. Cloud. My plans following high school are to attend the University of Minnesota in the College of Biological Sciences. My hopes are to complete my undergraduate in there in the Pre-Medicine program, attend graduate school, and specialize in a currently undecided field of…

I continue to engage in medical experiences with my most memorable being, a six-week intense summer program offered by the University of Miami's School of Medicine, which aims to provide a mini medical school experience. We were taught several courses by medical school professors, including Anatomy & Physiology lab where we studied a human cadaver. As well, I shadowed doctors in departments such as Neurology and Trauma, where I observed my first surgery. This experience exposed me to the patience and detail of practicing medicine and interconnectedness…

Since my last application to Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry I have been making small changes and improvements in my life that has not only strengthened my application, but it has also shaped me into more of a dedicated, hardworking, and intelligent individual today, prepared to handle the challenges and difficulties of optometry school. I was very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to shadow an additional optometrist, Dr. Charles Kim who works in a private practice at Sangha Optical, where I was able to increase my first-hand knowledge and experience in the field of optometry. I observed and learned how contact lens examinations would be performed and the different types of contact lens available, how pre-eye examinations…

As long as I can remember I have always loved to learn new things. When I began my journey back in 2005 to pursue a degree I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to focus on. What I found amazing was shortly after starting college my love for learning grew exponentially. Today nearly 10 years later I am close to realizing my goal of earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing. When I reflect on how much I have learned over this past year I am so grateful for the learning opportunities that the Bachelors of Science in Nursing at Western Governor University has brought to my life and to my career as a Registered Nurse. The artifacts in my portfolio are the evidence that my program of study has prepared me to be proficient in such areas of professional nursing as, patient safety, nursing research, evidence-base practice, quality of care, effective leadership, and community health. My Leadership Practicum enabled me to discover a healthcare concern on the unit that I work on. In collaboration with team members, we were able to come up with successful solutions that were supported by evidence based research. My Community Health and Population Practicum course required me to broaden my communication skills with others. This course brought me the knowledge and experience that I needed to be proficient in communicating with patients, colleagues, and professionals in the community.…

When people hear “pre-medicine,” they think of majors like biology, chemistry, biomedical engineering, health sciences, and other popular majors. I chose chemistry as my major, not only because I wanted to stand out not blend in, but also because I am aware of my strengths and weaknesses. I have always performed better in chemistry than in biology. I prefer challenges and I love the way chemistry challenges me. I am going into freshmen year with the knowledge of the level of difficulty that my major encompasses. I need to remain focused and work hard in order to succeed and achieve a solid gap of at least 3.6 for admission to medical school.…
