Sociology of health is not confined to the narrow, area of medicine. According the World Health Organisation(WHO), health is ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’. This is all-inclusive definition focuses on a positive view of health, rather than regarding health merely as not being ill. This definition could be argued as being overly idealistic and too broad as, in reality, most of us are not completely physically, mentally well at any one time. Using this definition we are unhealthy if we have a headache or are a bit fed up. Another problem is that it sees health as an absolute term in that it fails to take into account the notion that, within any given society, people understand different things by the concept of health – that it can change over time and between cultures. According to Dubos(1987) good health involves being able to function effectively. This implies that being healthy or ill are relative experiences/ concepts. From this standpoint, health means very different things to different people and the health of an individual can be judge against, for example, their gender, age and occupation. For example, a young, male professional athlete may well have a very different conception of health and wellbeing compared with an elderly, wheelchair-bound female. This view that health is a relative concept will be explored in the subsection on the social construction of health and illness.…

Sociology, the study of society and social behaviour of groups, at various levels and from different perspectives, from solid interpretations to generalisations. It can vary from the study of two individuals encounter to the analysis of global social processes. There are three main areas of sociology, social structures such as education, family and social stratification, social systems for example culture and identity and social issues such as the causes of crime and the impact of unemployment. It is difficult to define society, other than as a number of people who live in the same territory, participate in common culture and are relatively independent of people outside it. Individuals and societies have different views of defining health and illness, considering how it allows one to function, the means of improving and maintaining health and whether it extends beyond the physical domain, dependent on the culture, age, gender and class. There are three main concepts of health, the holistic concept views the whole person, mind, body, spiritual health and social well-being, seeing health as being emotionally comfortable, and clear of physical disorders and diseases. Individuals with a positive concept of health believe that by keeping a healthy diet and keeping fit that they are within good health, feeling actively responsible for ones health and guilty when becoming unwell. Whereas a negative concept of health views health as an absence of illness or disease, taking good health for granted and believing that no special actions are required to remain healthy. Within the sociological study of health there are two main models; firstly the biological model; which views how a medical professional views the body as a machine and the professionals role is to repair the disorder. The professional believes that if incorrectly maintained, the body will deteriorate. The role…

Society experiences health and wellness in many different perspectives. Sociologically speaking, there are two major theoretical aspects to healthcare. Functionalism demonstrates illness as an inhibitor on society’s functions. Conflict theory describes issues within the healthcare system, rather than focusing on individual illness affecting society. All in all, both approaches share the same ideology on the source of overall health. These two perspectives illustrate a sociological root for issues within health and medicine.…
