Persuasive Speech: Be Healthy
Opening: On the Stress Directions web site I found that stress is linked to the six leading causes of death in the U.S: “heart disease, cancer, lung ailments, accidents, cirrhosis of the liver, and suicide.” And that $300 billion is spent every year on stress related medical expenses. (Stress Directions, Inc.) I also found from the National Center for Health Statistics site that in 2004 21.5% of adults were smokers, 38% engaged in absolutely no physical activity during their leisure time, only about a forth did some type of strengthening exercise, and 58.7% were overweight. (N.C.H.S.) Thesis Statement: Bad physical and mental health and stress are directly related. Each leads to more of the others and all are bad. Today I’m going to be convincing you to live healthy and free of stress. Preview: First I will explain what it means to be healthy. Then I will tell you about stress. Then I will explain how each is related to the other. Finally I will tell you why it is a good idea to be healthy and stress- free and how to get that way. Body:

Main Idea: Here is the formal definition of health that I found on the Your Directory site: “Physical and mental well-being; freedom from disease, pain, or defect; normalcy of physical and mental functions; soundness.” (Your Directory). Being healthy is being physically and mentally fit. This is more difficult for some than others but out of the reach of almost no one.
A. Baring something like being a quadriplegic, no matter what your disposition you can be
physically healthy. And I don’t mean just skinny, because that’s not all there is to
being physically healthy. In fact many really skinny people are extremely unhealthy
because they don’t eat. Being physically healthy means that your body is working
