Roles and Functions of a Manager
A Health care manager is someone who administrates a department in a hospital, medical facility or medical office. “Every manager’s main duty is to succeed in helping the organization achieve high performance while utilizing all of the organization’s human and material resources (Lombardi and Schermerhorn, 2007).” A manager’s role takes on many tasks and skills that require the ability to interact with other people, exchange and process information, make decisions, and positively respond to changes. Managers must know how to plan, organize, lead, and control (Lombardi, 2007). All four functions are very important when it comes to managing any organization. However, one thinks that leading is the most important role in management. As a good leader one will inspire others to do their best in order to accomplish ones objectives. One must motivate employee interest, communicate well, provide adequate training and use power effectively to get them to work hard to attain ones goal. According to Schyve, M.D. (2009), poor communication, inadequate training, and lack of procedural compliance—often can be traced back to the failure of leadership to institute systemic solutions to ensure safety. Also, for effective leadership one must first understand employee’s values, emotions, attitudes, and personalities. “Through leading, managers build commitments, encourage activities that support goals, and influence others to do their best work on the organization’s behalf (Lombardi & Schermerhorn, 2007).” Without good leadership, all other functions seem to fall apart. The most significant aspect related to health care management that one would want to gain by taking this class is to learn to how to do better with time management. When it comes to time management, it seems there is not enough hours during the day to finish
