Violence in the workplace is increasingly widespread and it could result in significant cost for both young workers and the institutions (Leck & Galperin 2006). Horizontal violence can occur in any workplace where there is an unequal distribution of power or where a group’s independence is controlled by another group with more intense power and status (DalPezzo & Jett, 2010).…

For instance, as a manager at a growing call center, I deal with a myriad excuses from employees on their attendance and job performance. Unlike with my family and friends, I do not sit quietly and allows things to blow over. I quickly try to assess the situation and will use my power of position to correct any issues. I am upfront about the problem and tend to take a competitive, assertive view. After all, it is a business and I cannot let an employee try to breach the line of hierarchy. A tactic I personally like to use is threatening. It is effective because there is some credibility and truth behind each threat. Threatening has been very useful for me and while one major downfall of it is that employees see me as strict dictator, it allows for a business that flows and maintains minimal job errors. The same could be said about conflict that arises when I am working with a group on a school project. I do not want my grade to suffer and therefore take on a competitive approach to the conflict in order to secure my interest.…

Workplace violence is violent and nonviolent acts that take place in the workplace against employees. These acts can very well occur outside the workplace and can range from physical assaults, homicide, verbal threats, harassment, intimidation, and bullying (Mathis & Jackson, p. 491). Though such acts are nothing new to our society, workplace violence garnered national awareness when a disgruntled post office employee in Edmond, Oklahoma went to work and killed 14 fellow employees before committing suicide (Tjaden & Thoennes, 2001). Society has now coined the phrase “going postal” towards employees who display their aggravation through violent acts. Surprisingly, the rate of violence in the workplace has declines since 1993. According to a Special Report conducted by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, from 2002 to 2009, the rate of nonfatal workplace violence has declined by 35%, following a 62% decline in the rate from 1993 to 2002 (Harrell).…

There are different types of workplace violence, which can be categorized as follows: (1)violence by outsiders or nonemployees, usually in the attempt of a crime, such as robbery or shoplifting, (2)violence by a customer or a client, such as a student or a patient, (3)violence by employees and former employees, and (4)violence by domestic partners, such as boyfriends/girlfriends and husbands/wives. Such categorization can help in coming up with ways to prevent workplace violence since each type of violence requires a different approach to prevention, and certain workplaces and environments may be at higher risk for certain types of violence.…
