Review the following two case studies. Each patient is being referred to a specialist for further evaluation of a nervous system disorder. Outline characteristics of the disease each patient is suffering from by answering the questions associated with each case study. Answer in your own words.

Case Study 1 Name | Myelin S. Heath | Patient # | 12312312 | DOB: | 03/05/1986 | Physician | Dr. Delgadillo | Date: | 02/16/20XX |

Dear Ray,

Myelin visited my office yesterday complaining of numbness in his right leg and face. He has also been experiencing muscle weakness and mild depression. I noticed a delay in his visual response in both eyes. I have referred Myelin to your facility because of possible multiple sclerosis, and I am requesting an MRI of the brain and spine. Please fax the results to me as soon as possible.

Regards,
Ruben Delgadillo, M.D.

Answer the following questions.

1. What could have caused Myelin’s disease?

This may be a hereditary situation. Unfortunately, there is not a cure for multiple sclerosis so it could be a case of being passed down from generation to generation. Normally, when a person has multiple sclerosis, the person will have numbness in the legs and blurred vision. It is a great idea to have the MRI done of the brain and spine to ensure this is the disease Myelin has.

2. What structure(s) and function(s) of the nervous system are affected by multiple sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis does affect the brain and the spinal cord. The myelin sheath is damaged when a person has multiple sclerosis (“Emedicinehealth”, 2012). A person that has multiple sclerosis will have nerve damage that is caused by inflammation in the brain, optic nerve, or spinal cord (“Emedicinehealth”, 2012). There are several structure and functions that can be

--Multiple Sclerosis is causes the demyelination of axons in the spinal cord and brain. This is a result of loss of oligodendrocytes and scarring of white matter in the nervous system. Also, demyelination in MS is inflammation caused by an autoimmune response. The inflammation prevents proper recovery and repair of axonal myelination.…

Multiple Sclerosis makes it so that the nerve’s protective layer is eaten away by the immune system, making it very painful for the person with this disease from maybe a stinging pain or something relative to it. The immune system attacks the nerve protection like any other bacteria or virus, except attacking the “myelin” of the nerve. This disease affects the Digestive, Respiratory, and Circulatory systems and more; however, it affects the nervous system primarily. It also affects lungs, eyes, the bladder, skin, muscles and many other organs in which it comes across.…

In MS, axon demylination and nerve fiber loss occurs in patches throughout the central nervous system. This causes a wide spread and chronic dysfunction involving impulse transmission. For example, symptoms range from sensory-perceptual deficits to fatigue weakness, tremors, ataxia, dysphagia, slurred speech, incontinence and involuntary evacuation of the bowels. These are only a partial list of possibilities.…

Signs and symptoms of MS vary, based on the location of lesions, and may change throughout the duration of the disease (Schapiro, 2005). Sensory abnormalities, optic neuritis, motor symptoms, organ dysfunction, systemic symptoms, etc., are some aspects of the body in which may be affected by MS and are a result of debilitating transmission of an action potential from nerve cells from the brain to the spinal chord due to the demyelination of the axon (Calabresi, 2011). MS is an incurable disease (Boppanna, Huang, Ito & Dhib-Jalbut, 2011). According to Kargiotis, Paschali, Messinis and Papathanaspolous (2010), treatment options for MS are divided into two…

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is the condition where the myelin that surrounds nerve fibres in the nervous system becomes damaged. In a normal nervous system, ‘Myelin helps messages from the brain to travel quickly and smoothly to the rest of the body.’ (NHS MS). Without myelin, it can be more difficult for messages to be sent to and from the brain which results in the system being…

A disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS) is known as Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and affects over 2.5 million people worldwide. Around 400,000 people who have the disease reside in the United States. Of that 400,000 the ratio is roughly one woman to every seven men. Multiple Sclerosis is a disease where the individual’s immune system attacks the central nervous system. The immune system attacks and damages the myelin sheath which is a coating that is around the nerve fibers which eventually attacks and kills those nerve fibers as well. Every signal that controls your thoughts and daily movements’ originate from the brain and the spinal cord, it is extremely difficult to move or even think when those signals are not properly functioning.…

    i. According to IU Health, multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the central nervous system. Myelin is a fatty tissue that surrounds and protects the nerve fibers. The immune system attacks the myelin sheath resulting in scar tissue called sclerosis. These areas are also called plaques or lesions. When damaged in this way, the nerves are unable to conduct electrical impulses to and from the brain.…

Multiple Sclerosis is a complex disease of a heterogeneous nature. Its etiology has caused many controversies and still remains unknown in the medical community after many decades of research. Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system and the spinal cord, which leads to patches of plaques in the regions of the brain and the spinal cord (Tenemabaum, 2011). The disease affects the body’s neurons, the cells of the brain and the spinal cord that carry information, which creates thoughts and perception, therefore allowing the brain to control the body instead of…
