20 Nov, 2014 Speaking to Inform Topic: Hayao Miyazaki theme of environmentalism
General Goal: To inform
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience on Japanese director, Hayao Miyazaki’s views on environmentalism through his films. Introduction Attention Getter: “I’m hoping I’ll live another thirty years. I want to see the sea rise over Tokyo and the NTV tower become an island. I’d like to see Manhattan underwater. I’d like to see when the human population plummets and there are no more highrises, because nobody’s buying them. I’m excited about that. Money and desire — all that is going to collapse, and wild green grasses are going to take over.”
Relate to Audience: Everything’s ran by technology and it’s ruining the environment.
Introduce the Topic: Miyazaki is an animator and storyteller whose main audience is children.
Yet he has a cultural and ethical dimension in his films that is sorely lacking in all but the most specialized movies of any genre. Having viewed many of his beautiful films, we are struck by the clarity of his message on ecological problems.
Speaker Credibility: Research.

Making films relevant to today’s culture is a key factor to their success because it gives people something they can related to and identify with. If you have a personal connection to the topic of a film then not only are you more likely to be interested in it and want to go see it but it will more than likely end up being one of your favorites so you'll recommend it to friends and family and maybe when it gets released on DVD you'll rent it or even buy it. Filmmakers need to choose topics that appeal to the public because that is how they make more money. Television and movies are a part of our everyday life and therefore their relationship to culture is on that is ongoing and has a constant significant effect on one another. While films are often a reflection of today’s society, changes in culture are often a result of something seen on television or in a movie. For example, our hairstyles, speech patterns, and clothing styles are all greatly influenced by things we’ve seen in a movie or on our favorite…

If all the glaciers in the world melted, sea levels will rise by approximately 230 feet. One According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the magnitude of destruction caused by rising sea levels is still uncertain; flooding can rise up to thirty feet. Miami, for example depicted in “The Siege of Miami.” shows a possible scenario of massive flooding and reallocation of residence. Author Elizabeth Kolbert conducts investigative reporting by following Han Wanless, the chairman of the University of Miami’s Geological Science Department, and visits locations vulnerable to flooding. Together, they interact with residents and determine that the majority of them do not understand the cause of flooding. On another occasion, Kolbert encounters…

Films that I particularly favor are thrillers. One reason Thrillers become so enjoyable for me, a sense of diversion is created making the viewers more indulge in the movie all the way to the ending. The plots are usually twisted, climatic, suspenseful and intelligence is often use far as the writing perspective to result in an ecliptic viewing of the movie. A really great thriller will usually bring a shock factor by the climax, then the movie will receive a better understanding from the beginning to end. Another genre of films I enjoy are Musicals they are fashionable and express emotions through singing. I am really into lyricism so I enjoy comparing the actual expression of the each character's individual story and the progression…

The way films are created and pieced together has progressed greatly over the past century, where before 1910 there was little use of film techniques such as special effects, animation, complex transition sequences and many more. However the introduction of film techniques have helped films gain a sense of genre and establishment as they were used to create specific intensities set out by the director; this is where roles corresponding to certain areas were introduced such as cinematographers, production designers and lighting directors. A classic example of a well-known director would be Alfred Hitchcock (1899 – 1980) who is famous for creating suspense films like The Birds or Psycho. I am mentioning him as he had revolutionised the way films…

In the early 1900’s silent films amazed audiences with images, later talkies impressed with sound, today we have 3D. As technology continues to evolve so too will film genres. Genres, while having some shared characteristics, also differ in terms of stylistic devices used. For instance, the dramatic film “The Notebook” effectively uses color to reinforce theme and has plausible performers as the two main protagonists.…
