Hawaii's Motivation To Grow Up On Big Island
I believe a lack of drive and motivation for people growing up on Big Island is really hurting our community. So many smart and excited kids graduate from high school, go to college on the mainland, and end up getting a job there and barely come back to see family here. This reduces the amount of talent we have on the island to start innovative projects or fix critical issues.

Keeping Hawaii's best and brightest working with the community is dificult, it's not like we can just tie a rope to them and pull them back when we need them. What we need is for Hawaii's youth to want to stay in the islands and be a positive impact. This means showing the children of Hawaii the possibilities and oppourtunities this island has to offer before they leave

Blue Island can be characterized generally as a low-to-moderate income community, with significant pockets of middle class and working-class family households, as well as more impoverished sections. Basic educational attainment of Blue Island residents (25 years and over) has increased over the last decade; however, the proportion of residents receiving degrees of higher education has decreased. More Blue Island residents are receiving high schools diplomas now, as compared to 2000, while a smaller percentage of residents are achieving bachelor’s degrees or higher.…

In January of 1778, Captain Cook discovered the Hawaiian Islands. Many foreigners from around the world began to arrive, introducing many new things to the Hawaiians. Foreign influence brought trade to Hawaii, which gave Hawaiians metal and guns. Even though foreign influence had some positive effects on Hawaii, I believe that foreign influence had a negative impact on Hawaii because trade brought not only guns and metal, but it also led to famine, disease, debt, and the deaths and lessening of the Hawaiian population.…

For my Follow on Service Project I am creating a study abroad mentorship program called the HPU Go Abroad Initiative that focuses on incoming and current low income and minority/ underrepresented students at Hawaii Pacific University. Hawaii Pacific University mission is to celebrate and promote diversity as it considered one of the culturally diverse universities in the nation and the world. To take it to another level, supporting and uplifting underrepresented students especially Native Hawaiian/American, Black, and Hispanic students and students from low income families will help encourage them to study abroad. Statistics show 22 percent of the student body are Pell Grant recipients but many do not know that this makes them eligible to compete for the Gilman Scholarship. The program will include past study abroad students that have similar backgrounds as the focus group as mentors and past Gilman Scholarship winners from…

Arguably, the best way to improve citizenship is to send children out into the community as citizens. They might, for example, identify a pressing issue in the neighborhood surrounding their school and act collectively to change it. This, of course, is not the type of education Gates and other business leaders are after, as they need number crunchers whipped into shape by the conventionally raised bar. As American children grow fatter, schools nationwide are eliminating recess, all in the name of spending more time on task. Arts programs, despite repeated studies linking them to more flourishing definitions of "intelligent," are gone as well, and classes which might lead to greater intelligence on the part of our society, think "logic and reasoning" or "identifying propaganda," must be pushed aside for test prep…

I have always aspired to make an impact on the world. Teaching in an urban school setting will enable me to make a positive impact and fulfill my share in this world while working a job I am passionate about. Students in urban schools are frequently looked over and are not taken seriously. Society does not expect students in urban schools to make it far in life, and often these children do not receive the opportunities other students receive. However we, as a society, fail to recognize the capabilities and talents all students, even in urban schools, embody. Students in urban schools are just as intelligent and worthy of success as anyone else. I want to take part to ensure…

In the United States, civil engagement has been a crucial component of society, whether it is through political activism or lending a helping hand to fellow neighbors. In recent years, youth participation in volunteerism has fluctuated drastically, resulting in a rising amount of high schools requiring students to complete a certain amount of service hours upon graduation. Despite the push for community service, Maryland remains the only state that has officially adopted service learning as a requirement for graduation. With several other states closely behind Maryland, Kentuckians are not experiencing any major amendments to high school graduation requirements.…

Business owners and scouts could go get someone with more experience. People need to realize that when someone says you have your whole life ahead of you that doesn't mean wait to the last second to decide on what they are going to do with their life. I believe people should at least know what they are going to do before they get out of highschool. Society is getting harder and the population is growing which means there are less and less jobs out there for people. This means people have to train to be the best that they could…

    Migration: Long Term

    • 912 Words

Richard Sennett, the Sociologist basically states in No Long Term: New Work and the Corrosion of Character" that even though Rico has been prepared by a good disciplined background and solid education, the unstable economy and modern work arena in which he exists, has uprooted him four times (Sennett 152), causing him serious problems in raising his family, establishing long term relationships, and in existing as an upstanding, trustworthy individual. I agree with Sennett: Migration is the equivalent of this, which took place in my life making it difficult to be bonded with friends and family, in a long term network of trustworthy and dependable people; and University and high school ill-prepared me for the shallowness of the short term work arena.…
