One of Homer’s main obstacles was his community who made fun of him and doubted him for a very long time. That is, until they saw Homer’s first successful rocket launch. When the boys go to school, all the other kids would constantly ostracize them because everyone knows that “the jocks are the only ones who get to go to college.” And that is because without a football scholarship “the rest of ‘em will go to work in the mines.” Homer, Quentin, Roy and O’Dell did not have a very good start with their rockets. Their first, did not take off, the second took off in the air a bit but then went straight into the mining area. With that rocket, Homer’s father told them not to shoot off any more rockets on company property. Even with Leon Bolden’s help, they did not get the right type of rocket shape, or formula to get the rockets to go straight up and fly as high as possible for as long as possible. The first time the town showed up for a rocket launch, the…
The novel tells us that the fear of failure is the greatest obstacle to happiness. “There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.” So often we hide behind excuses of not being able to do this or that, but the real story is that we are too afraid to take a chance. It is our fear of failing or looking foolish in front of others that keeps us from being who we want to be.…
Everyone will behave differently when they face adversity. Some of them might give up easily, or they fight with their courage instead of accepting adversity and tragedy. In True Notebooks, Mark Salzman shows us how the boys deal with obstacles. If those boys can’t overcome obstacles, obstacles overcome them. Therefore, they must persist in the end when they face adversity. Sometime, some of them are lucky to overcome obstacles by persisting in the end, but many of them can’t overcome obstacles because of the situation, or they don’t even want to overcome obstacles.…

With the American Dream comes hard work. Most of the time, the American Dream does not just fall into one’s hands. Dan Rather gives an example of this by highlighting Delores Kesler’s rise, noting the she "began her career at 22 with a series of dead-end jobs, struggling to make ends meet" (41). She had to start at the bottom and work her way up to where she is now. Delores Kesler had to work hard to be able to achieve her dream of becoming a self-made millionaire. He also shows the importance of seeking help by telling the story of Curtis G. Alkens Sr., who “believes that he would have disappeared completely if he hadn’t, at 26, finally asked for help” (Rather, 45) had he not done so, he would not be able to read today. “Collins pursued her dream, joining Air Force ROTC at Syracuse University….Eventually...on NASA” (44) Rather begins to tell a story on how Eileen Collins had the dream to fly and she…
Likewise, when people try challenges on their own it can “bring out [the] worst or [the] best” experiences. Furthermore, when going through an obstacle it can explain how positive or negative a situation can be, such as when athletes train and injure themselves they get to know their true talents and limits. People will not understand how well they can do during a real obstacle or challenge if no barriers exist. On the other hand, others claim even when talents are known they will not help people during a difficult moment, because Louie, Mac, and Phil still “cling to one another” on the raft in the excerpt, Unbroken. Louie goes though many challenges after the plane crashes and finds his abilities, but in some conditions people will always be afraid about their surroundings and rely on a friend. The society will learn how to conquer an obstacle on their own if no one assists them even when in…

How curiosity drove the pioneers, greed drove gold diggers, and freedom drove the slaves. Langston shows the reader that all American dreams have one thing in common, determination. Taking a look at regular people seeking out their dreams, determination still seems to be the key. When asked how do you achieve the American dream, April Gordon responded, “by working as hard as you can, never giving up and staying dedicated”. By looking at dreams from this perspective, dreams are proven to be more than an endgame it becomes the process that takes you there.…

You must have the strong will to “want” to accomplish whatever goal you set for yourself. For example, when I was playing the game of chicken and always lost in the beginning, this would be the obstacle that stood in front of me, but I overcame this by not saving any strokes to get back. I remember a time when I was saying, “You want to know how I did it? This is how I did it, Anton: I never saved anything for the swim back.” Another example of how I overcame my obstacles is obvious. My biggest obstacle that I faced was when the company Gattaca only allowed “pure breeds,” if you will, to be co-workers and be able to go up to space, which was my dream. I surpassed that rule by impersonating my good friend Jerome. A quote he said to me once was, “I got the better end of the deal. I only lent you my body - you lent me your dream.” Jerome was immobilized from waist down when he was hit by the bus, which let me impersonate him and fulfilling my dreams of going to space. All my hard work is finally paying off. My big goal that I have been longing to achieve is in sight. Not many people get to live my dream, but it took a lot of planning and thought for me to sneak my way into Gattaca. My next point will be my final thought about human…
“Work hard, dream big, do the impossible, and fly to the stars.” These are the words I always heard from my Father when I was growing up. From time to time, I face challenges, ones that would literally make me break down and cry. As I sob to my last tears, my father’s voice would echo through my mind, a distant voice from the past, that would propel me to run after the invisible silhouette in front of me. “No moment should be wasted, and I should live my life to the fullest,” I whispered.…
