In the article “Happiness: Enough Already” the author Sharon Begley draws up the argument that happiness may be the ultimate goal in life for many people, but too much happiness can also be as what she describes as “the end of the drive for ever-greater heights of happiness” (page number). Throughout the article Begley conveys that happiness is not always for the best, and that sometimes sadness and negativity brings out the best in a person. Begley proves her point by exploiting the negative views of happiness. Begley suggest that happiness is not instilled in a person for a long time because “negative emotion evolved for a reason” (page number). Begley then moves forward to better prove her explanation by emphasizing successful artists who…

For centuries, society has shaped these abstract ideas of what happiness means and how one could achieve happiness in their lives. However, in order to even understand what actions could lead to one’s happiness, one must be able to understand the definition of happiness itself. Having read Charles Dicken’s book Great Expectations, happiness persists as a pleasure or sense of a meaningful and rich psychosocial integration in a person’s understanding of himself or herself.…

In planning her Happiness Project, Rubin turned to the wisdom of the ages, scientific knowledge, and lessons from pop culture all aimed at creating happiness. She uses this book to set down her adventures and discoveries along the way. She learned a number of things, including that novelty and challenge are important sources of happiness, that while perhaps money can’t completely buy happiness it can help in its purchase when it is spent with fore thought, that ordering and organizing her external environment contributed to a sense of inner peace, that treating herself could make her feel worse, that venting negative emotions didn’t get rid of them, and that sometimes it was the smallest of changes that could make the largest differences in her world and her happiness.…

Another example is when Guy Montag finds out that Clarisse's family enjoys sitting around with all the lights on, "What's going on? Oh, just my mother and father and uncle sitting around"(9.) Later he asked what they do would sitting around, and she answered "they would talk." The fact that the family is sitting around, talking, is another form on happiness. It still counts as happiness, but not what the society would expect. Then again, it is coming from a "weird" family. The last example of a happiness sighting is when Montag sees his wife sitting around and listening to music, "She had both ears plugged with electronic bees that were humming the hour away....she was a expert at lip reading from ten years apprenticeship at Seashell ear thimbles(18.) Already in the morning Mildred ,Montag's wife, is already doing she likes to do.Which, apparently, is listening to her music. Also in the passage, it says that she has been listening to her music for ten years. Which means she has been experiencing happiness for a long time. Nevertheless, happiness can be in any shape ans sizes. It can be emotionally or physically, but any form of happiness is…

In the article “Get Out of the Groove,” it is acknowledged that “human beings are constantly trying to make sense of the world” (de Lange). This suggests that people often do not realize what actually makes them happy, because they are too busy focusing on attempting to know everything about the world around them. For some people, it takes multiple things for them to feel happy. Often, they feel as if they can never reach full happiness (Flora, 66). However, in the article, “Just for the Joy of it,” it is argued that “scientific research has shown us that the spark of kindness resides in everyone and that even small actions can fan that spark into a flame (Zakrzewski, 26). This shows that, while de Lange and Flora believe that happiness is acquired through activities within oneself, Zakrzewski believes that happiness actually comes more from appreciating the smaller things in…

    1. Would you rather spend 1 year in prison or receive 5 years of probation with very severe restrictions? Could you envision a probationary sentence that was more severe than a custodial sentence? Explain your answer. I would never want to be confined in a jail or prison at all. If I had to choose I would take the 5 year probation sentence and stay out of trouble, however many criminals look at the situation differently. Some people think that receiving probation means that you have gotten away with the crime and thus they ignore all directives given by the probation officers. Probation officers have a hard time tracking these individuals and eventually they end up back in jail. I cannot envision a probationary sentence more severe than a custodial sentence but if there is one, the government needs to utilize it.…

Find out where the joy resides, and give it a voice far beyond singing; For to miss the joy is to miss all. In The Consolation of Philosophy, by author Alain de Botton we are introduced to a philosopher named Epicurus. He was born in 341 BC and started learning philosophy at the age of 14 by traveling to hear lessons from philosophers of his time. Later on, he found out that he couldn’t agree with much of what they were saying, so in his late twenties he decided to arrange his thought into his own philosophy about life. Epicurus spent most of his life of chasing happiness and was lead to a conclusion that it’s a rather tricky issue. He…

Instead, we will look to a second definition of happiness by Miriam-Webster presenting a definition that more reasonably proposes that happiness is one’s position on life rather than a transient feeling. Miriam-Webster states that happiness is “a state of well-being and contentment.” By introducing this idea of well-being to an explanation of the inspiration of happiness, Miriam-Webster’s definition suggests that different elements, such as health and comfort, are required to create happiness. Many people over the course of history have attempted to define happiness, and some definitions are quite interesting, however, who is to say that any of the definitions are correct or incorrect? To answer the original question asked, “What is happiness?” there is no definite way to define happiness, especially not a definition that will be valid for every person. Happiness is something that is achieved, and once achieved, that person knows that something is different. It is something strived towards in our society because there are so many people facing adversity that many are unable to find their happiness due to their worries. In his book, Brave New World, Aldous Huxley introduces a type of society quite different from our own in which happiness…

Mr. Weiner’s search began in the Netherlands at Rotterdam's World Database of Happiness where he searches for, the happiest places, and even the unhappiest. “All cultures value happiness, but not to the same degree” (pg. 15). Weiner is a grump, he likes his coffee and occasional drink and doesn’t seem to be very comfortable with the word happiness. This journey took him all over the world in his own personal search for that word, Happiness. Weiner is one of the few that were able to show us where happiness is and was able to describe it with greatness. Indeed Eric Weiner did find happiness; the search can lead you on a journey to many different places. For some the search is futile, for others it is the journey and the destination that they find remarkable and the most meaningful. You should ask yourself, what is your happiness level?…

The idea of happiness varies among many different people and places. Moreover, happiness’s complexity shifts depending upon the different ways one consumes it: television, movies, music, and social media. What would it be like to live in a world where society dictates one’s happiness? In Anthem, this is the type of society in which everyone lives. However, the character Equality 7-2521 breaks the societal norm, and he eventually pursues the lifestyle Ayn Rand, the author, believed. She once wrote, “Happiness is a state of non-contradictory joy — a joy without penalty or guilt, a joy that does not clash with any of your values and does not work for your own destruction, not the joy of escaping from your mind, but of using your mind’s fullest…
