There are many things that one can learn from the book Hatchet. While on his way to meet his father for Summer vacation at the oil grounds in Canada, Brian Robinson finds himself stranded within the Canadian northern Wilderness. The plane he’s flying in crashes when the pilot has a heart attack and dies. Over the period of the summer Brian is determined to survive and hopes that someone will come looking for him before it becomes too late. Brian’s parents’ recently divorced leaving him to live with his mother in New York. His father’s job assigned him to work in Canada at the oil grounds. Brian’s mother cheated on his father which caused the divorce. His parents agreed that he would visit his father during the summer, forcing him to go against his will. His mother gave him a hatchet which was intended to be used with his father at work. After his plane crashes his thoughts reflect back to advice he received from his teacher, Mr.Perpich. He’d told Brian, “The only person you can count on is yourself.” This became his motivation for survival. Brian needed to make himself a shelter, so he found a cave and made a door so he would be safe at night. He needed to make a fire to keep himself warm inside the cave, so he took his hatchet out to the woods where he gathered rocks, wood, and moss. Once back …show more content…
He’d found turtle eggs and buried them so he could eat them later. Then a raccoon found them and ate them causing him to resort to catching and eating fish. Before building the fire, he got poked by a porcupine. That made him have to learn how to take out the quills so he wouldn’t get an infection. Eventually he makes his way back to where the plane crashed and discovers a survival pack, .22 rifle, and a transmitter. He attempts to make a distress call with the transmitter but thinks it’s broken since he doesn’t know how to use it. A passing plane hears his distress call and rescues

This is my INS on Hatchet. The book was written by Gary Paulsen the author that also wrote previous book I did an INS on. The book is set in the Canadian woods. I'm not sure what time period this book takes place in because it doesn't say in the book. I'm guessing somewhere in the 1980's or 90's. Now I will summarize the story of this book. The story is about Brian Robeson, a 13 year old boy who is going to visit his dad in Canada after his parents' divorce. He goes from Hampton, New York to Canada on a small plane. The driver has a heart attack and dies. Brian takes over the controls and crashes into the woods. Brian is now stranded all by himself in these woods. He thinks that he will be rescued, but that doesn’t end up happening. He finds berries and other types of foods and uses those to eat. Skip all the way to the end and a tornado strikes his area and destroys his shelter. After that, he notices that the tail of the plane has emerged and he goes into it and gets the survival pack. In it, he finds a transmitter and it calls a rescue helicopter thing to him. He then gets rescued. That is pretty much bigger main parts of the book. I chose this book for INS because I said that there are some similar things about this book and the one I did previously and that interested me so I decided to do this book for my ins. I also wanted to read this book again because I forgot some of the stuff that happens throughout the book.…

This is the first summer that he is going to stay with his father since his parents’ recent divorce. Brian is the only passenger in a Cessna 406 plane that will take him to Canada. Little does Brian know that this trip will change his life forever. Since his parents got divorced he hasn’t seen his father. He knows a secret about his mom that his father doesn’t. There is hope of survival. Brian is somewhere in the forests of Ontario or Quebec, in a region called the Canadian Shield. Carved out by glaciers long ago, the region is made up of ancient granite rock. It extends, in a horseshoe shape, from the southern edge of the Arctic Islands, around Hudson Bay, and over to the eastern coast of Newfoundland. The climate in the northern part of the Canadian Shield is extremely cold, with average temperatures in July ranging from forty to fifty degrees. Luckily Brian was there when it wasn’t there when it was extremely cold ,or it would be very hard to survive with snow so deep and no game. He starts to hunt.…

I believe the novel Hatchet has more foreshadowing and imagery. I know this because you can picture more in your mind than the movie “A Cry in the Wild”. For example, from the book, a tornado ripped through Brian’s shelter. We could predict the aftermath would be the shelter would all be ripped up. Another example was that his Brian’s mother a hatchet as a gift to help him because he was growing up and moving on.…

After a while, Ralph brought up the great idea of making a fire in order to signal the rescuers we would be on the island. I knew there was little time to waste just sitting around, so I led the group into the forest to gather firewood. Upon gathering wood, I was the one who came up with the idea of using Fatty’s specs as burning glasses. Still, I had never imagined that keeping a fire burning would be so hard! Later, I humbly offered the choir to maintain the fire in shifts. Everything went well until that swine Piggy decided to speak out again. He kept repeating himself about how building a fire was a bad choice, even though he didn’t contribute squat to anything to begin with. Still, bigger problems arose to overshadow his stupidity. The fire we thought had been put out actually spread and began burning down a chunk of the forest. To top it off, we are now missing a little shrimp with a mulberry-colored scar on his face. I remember him as the one who wouldn’t stop scaring others by talking about the “beasties in the forest”. Stupid kids always getting themselves into trouble. As the leader of the hunters, I will definitely find…

When I read the book and saw the movie I found many differences between the events in the book Hatchet and the events in the movie A Cry in the Wild. In the book when the plane crashed in the wilderness the rescue plane came after he founded food, made fire, and a shelter to live. When the rescue plane came Brian ran to make more fire to send signals in the sky so they could see him. In the movie the rescue plane came the same day as the plane crashed and he didn’t have fire or made a shelter to live so he screamed loudly so they could hear him or see him but the plane turned away. In this event I found significant difference and little similarities between “Hatchet” and “A Cry in the Wild”…
