Hassan, the Brave

“There are so many ways to be brave in this world. Sometimes bravery involves laying down your life for something bigger than yourself, or for someone else. Sometimes it involves giving up everything you have ever known for the sake of something greater.” This quote by Veronica Roth is true, however, the greatest act of bravery is giving up everything for someone lesser than yourself, like in The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. The story revolves around an Afghan named Amir and the son of his father's servant, Hasssan. Amir betrays Hassan and spends the rest of his life trying to redeem himself. Of all the characters in the book, Hassan is the bravest because he stands up for and protects Amir, even when it costs him everything.

Sometimes the bravest thing a person can do is show no fear, even when they are terrified. In the following quote, Hassan is threatening his and Amir's tormentor, Assef, so he'll leave Amir alone and Amir describes how he sees Hassan. “To an outsider,he didn't look scared. But Hassan's face was my earliest memory... And I saw that he was scared. He was scared plenty.” (36) Assef and his buddies were more of a threat to Hassan than Amir because of Amir's status but Hassan still puts himself in the middle to protect Amir. Despite the consequences Hassan faces, he still stands up for Amir.

The ability to forsake your own safety for someone else is the most selfless act of bravery there is. In the following quote, Amir sees Hassan cornered by Assef and gets raped while Amir runs. “I had one last chance to make a decision. One final opportunity to decide who I was going to be... In the end, I ran.” (63) Hassan sacrifices himself for Amir, whether Amir deserves it or not. Hassan hows bravery Rubel 2
