Harry Potter Essay
A Portkey to Self-Discovery When I picked up the first Harry Potter book, I never imagined that the series would have such a profound influence in my life. The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling has been an aid to me as I’ve grown up. These novels have themes of bravery, integrity, choices, love, and friendship. Because of the series, I feel that I have discovered my true self and the way that I see myself in the world. Albus Dumbledore once said, “It is our choices that show us who we truly are, far more than our abilities”. There is a recurring theme of making choices in the Harry Potter novels, and this particular lesson has always resonated with me. Although I believe that intelligence is absolutely paramount, I’ve learned that the choices I make will determine the path that I take throughout life. Although Harry is not the most intelligent student or gifted wizard, the choices that he made were often what helped him succeed. Voldemort and Harry were almost identical as children: they were both orphans growing up with muggles that they detested, but the choices that they made along the way decided their fate. During Voldemort’s reign of terror, many witches and wizards were faced with the dilemma of making the choice between “what is right and what is easy”. Those who only wanted to ensure their personal safety chose to join Voldemort’s side; those who were brave stood up for what they believed in, even though they were outnumbered. This has taught me to stand true to what is the right thing to do, even if I’m standing alone. Although I tend to fixate over things that I wish I could change, I have learned that it is pointless to dwell on matters that are out of my control. In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry stumbles across the Mirror of Erised, a mirror that reflects the viewer’s deepest desires. Harry sees his parents alive and well in the mirror, and becomes obsessed with revisiting the mirror each night to see the family that he never knew. However, Dumbledore warns Harry that many have been driven mad by what they see in the mirror and that “it does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live”. This has taught me to not let my hopes and dreams consume me, but to be present and take life day by day. The Harry Potter series has changed my life in a way that I never imagined. Because of these books, I have learned the value of my decisions and that there is no time like the present. Harry Potter has been a comfort in dark times and has shaped me into the person that I am today.

The two Democratic nominees have narrowed down to Hillary Clinton, former secretary of state and, Bernie Sanders, junior United States senator of Vermont, who fascinatingly enough, isn’t exactly a Democrat. He interchangeably identifies himself as an independent, a socialist, or an independent socialist. The two candidates share numerous viewpoints on certain policies, but the more one observes the more evident it becomes of their different positions and goals as candidates. While Hilary comes off as more traditional, cautious with her word choices, and some may say even say vague; Sanders is more to the point, straight forward.…

The film When Harry Met Sally shows many examples of negative and positive relationships. The positive relationships are healthy relationships and are best represented by the relationship between Harry and Sally. The negative relationships are unhealthy relationships and are best demonstrated by the relationship between Sally's friend Marie and the guys that she dates. Through these relationships, the film tries to answer the question, "Can men and women be just friends?", and also shows what can happen to a friendship when sex becomes involved.…

The Life and Crimes of Harry Lavender undermines many of the stereotypes within the genre of crime fiction. Marlene Days’ prominent themes are introduced in the extract. Power is characterised particularly through the antagonist, Sydney underworld figure Harry Lavender. Day also portrays the idea of deception and façade through her rendering of the duality of the city of Sydney and the characters within it. The book I chose to read for my second quarter government book was The Mocking Jay from the Hunger games series. The author of this book is Suzanne Collins. There is a lot that goes on in the story, involving many things in the war of her districts. It is causing a rebellion in the districts. Katniss takes stock of her new position as a rebel in District 13. Only three victors were saved from the arena from the last book from the Hunger games series; Beetee who is an old man from District 3, also known as Volts, Finnick who is the the victor from District 4 and Katniss's first ally and Katniss herself, but Peeta wasn't one of them – he's still missing, along with other victors, Enobaria who is the female tribute from District 2, Johanna who is the tribute from District 7, and Annie who wasn't in the Quarter Quell but was arrested when the arena blew up. Katniss is still haunted by Snow and fears for Peeta's life. The book starts in District 12, which has been reduced to ashes. Katniss alone wanted to see the district herself. This is about a month after the arena was blown up. While she is there, she takes back Buttercup who is Prim's cat, her father's old hunting jacket, a photo of her mother's wedding, and a book of plants. Before she leaves, she notices one of Snow's white roses on her dresser.…

On the night of Halloween in JK Rowling’s novel Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and his friend, Ron Weasley enjoy a meal in the Hogwart’s dining hall. During this scene, the author describes the banquet hall through describing the foods being served at each table and the decorations in the hall, such as floating pumpkin heads, replacing the usual floating candles. To apply Foster’s ideas presented in Chapter Two of his novel, How to Read Literature Like a Professor to Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the scene depicted in Rowling’s novel was described in such a way that the reader feels as if they are a part of the characters as they enjoy a celebratory meal. Within this joyful communion, unity is depicted…

The character I have chosen from Alice Walker's novel, 'Everyday Use,' is Mama. Mama is a single parent raising two daughters. Mama describes herself as a “large, big-boned woman with rough, man-working hands. She proudly tells of her ability to kill and clean hogs as “mercilessly” as any man. I believe these skills were acquired out of sheer survival and necessity. Mama starts the story recalling the dreams she often has in which she and Dee reunite on a television talk show. In this dream she has described herself almost as if it is the woman that she wished she was for example she states she is “a hundred pounds lighter, her skin like an uncooked barley pancake.” Although she says the way she looks in the dream is the way her daughter would want her to be, I think she longs for that as well.…
