Harlequin Ichthyosis Summary
In the medical journal article “Harlequin Ichthyosis”, the authors Claire A. Scott, Shefali Rajpopat, and Wei-Li Di explain how ABCA12 mutations underlie defective lipid transport, reduced protease regulation and skin barrier dysfunction. HI was first talked about in the diary of Reverend Oliver Hart, in which most cases babies born with this die. The diagnosis is most often clinical and the effects are apparent at birth. The entire body is covered in a thick layer of white plates of scales separated by deep re fissures. The thickened skin can restrict movement and cause limb contractures, inevitably causing digital necrosis.

This syndrome is not explicitly fatal, but cardiac disorders caused by the DiGeorge syndrome are its greatest cause of mortality. Ancient Egyptians used it from the Late Period by placing it under the heads of their deceased persons. This odd disk, covered with strange images and texts, is known as "Hypocephalus," which is a Greek word for "That which is below the head," referring to its religious significance. This unusual religious pillow enabled the deceased to identify himself to the sun god by the light coming through him.…

GVHD is a complication that can occur after a transplant in which the newly transplanted stem cells attack the transplant recipient 's body. This reaction to the stem cell transplant GVHD suppresses your immune system which can make you susceptible to other illnesses and diseases. Current research is focusing on finding what causes Behcet’s syndrome and how to help with the symptoms. Researchers believe that cyclosporine might help treat oral ulcers, skin lesions, and inflammation of the eyes but unfortunately the symptoms return if the patient stops taking this drug. Apermilast is now being studied for a possible treatment for oral and genital ulcerations. Genome-wide association studies is the group that confirmed HLA-B51 is connected to Behcet’s. Test results show that anticardiolipin antibodies are present in about 30% of patients. Patients also have negative antinuclear and antineutrophilic cytoplasmic antibodies. Thrombosis is reportedly found in this syndrome which is associated with factor V Leiden mutations and with prothrombin g20210A mutations. Researchers are still studying this disease and have so much more to learn about it before being able to find a cure if there even is one. For now patients with this disease can live relatively normal lives and take the medications they need to combat the…
