Lab Report 1Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium
Note on late reports: You have almost one month to complete this lab report. I will NOT accept late lab reports. You must turn the report in at the start of class (that means 1:00 AM sharp!) December 1, 2010. If you come to class late, I will not accept your lab report. Please consider e-mailing me your report before you come to class to make sure it is not late.

Here is what I expect you to cover in your report: 1. Introduction: Provide a brief introduction to what you did. This should include something about why you did this lab work. What were we trying to accomplish by amplifying this region of DNA from the nuclear genome? Why do we care if our class is in Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium? More generally, why do we care if any population is in Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium?

Methods: You do not need to rewrite everything you did step by step. But you should give a general overview of the techniques you used. For example, rather than stating step by step the DNA extraction process, you could say something like “we extracted our DNA from cheek cells using proteinase K digestion and a silica spin column”. If you deviated from the protocols given to you in class you must state what you did differently. For example, if you accidentally pipetted 2 μl of pro K instead of 20 μl and then added additional pro K to compensate for this error, state it in the Methods section. The Methods section should include everything from the DNA extraction to the Χ2

Fruit flies have made a huge contribution towards knowledge about genetics, but for most people, they are just annoying insects that are attracted to their fruit. Their scientific name is Drosophila melanogaster, and to scientists, they have been a key to understand many principles of heredity including sex linked inheritance, epistasis, multiple alleles, and gene mapping. Fruit flies were the first organisms to be used for genetic analysis in 1910 by Thomas Hunt Morgan, and ever since, they have been used for genetic experiments (Ashburner).…

Materials and Methods – this is where the details of the study are listed. Where did the specimen come from and what methods were used to identify it? Be specific but do not rewrite the lab manual. One way is to mention the names of the materials used and reference the lab manual or notes for the procedure or method and elaborate when necessary. It is NOT necessary to write out the methods in detail, since this lab report is for the identification of an unknown bacterium and the methods are explained in detail in the lab handouts. THIS SHOULD BE IN PARAGRAPH FORMAT (I.E. LOOK AT JOURNAL ARTICLES FOR AN EXAMPLE) ALL ASSAYS MUST BE INCLUDED TO RECEIVE FULL CREDIT (Growth curve, CFUs (counting colonies/dilutions, can include equation), Growth after incubating at RT for 6 days, MIC (antimicrobial disc), Catalase, Oxidase, DNA isolation). Under each headline describe the methods and material. The example below includes for headline that should be included but not all. ALL ASSAYS MUST BE INCLUDED TO RECEIVE FULL CREDIT and MAKE SURE YOU READ YOUR PROTOCOLS I GAVE TO YOU CLEARLY. SHOULD ALSO KNOW THE PURPOSE OF ALL EXPERIMENTs. SO THAT YOU ARE ABLE TO DISCUSS CLEARLY. Include 1pass and 2pass under…
