Harbor Seal Human Impact
Human Impact And Population The negative human impacts on harbor seals are devastating, and there are yet to be any major positive impacts. In the 1900s, fur traders would hunt harbor seal pups that were less than four weeks old for their fine coats, which were highly valued. This led to a decrease in the harbor seal population. Harbor seals were also hunted by salmon fishermen who saw the seals as competitors for the fish. After a while many harbor seal populations had to abandon traditional haul-out areas. This was sad for the seals, because the main diet of a harbor seal is fish.
Marine debris are yet another threat to harbor seals. Harbor seals can get tangled in nylon fishing nets or plastic packing materials, causing severe injuries or drowning. They also end up eating plastic debris which can cause starvation or serious problems in the digestive tract. Despite the negative human impact, the Harbor seals population has flourished throughout the years and is estimated to increase every year by 5.5%, since 1981.

The life expectancy of a seal is around 25 to 30 years. The male harbor seals tend to have a shorter lifespan because of the stress of fighting during breeding seasons.

Predators + Prey = Food Chain Harbor seals are prayed upon by many animals, but also eat many animals, known as pray. This creates the food chain and helps keep nature in balance.
Adult Harbor seals eat many things including squid, crustaceans, molluscs, and a variety of fish; including, rockfish, herring, flounder, salmon, hake, and sand lance. Harbor seals do not chew their food and often swallow it whole. A harbor seal's diet changes during the different seasons, when different prey are available. A young seal pups diet is mainly consists of small crustaceans that are easy to catch.

Mating/Breeding: They mate on the ice (as opposed to other seals which mainly mate in the water) from late September to early November. During the breeding season a male mates with a female and generally stays with her (until the time her pup is unaccustomed), but takes no part in raising the pup. Females give birth to a single pup which is weaned 3-4 weeks after birth. During this time the female spends the entire time on the ice with the pup.…

According to the NOAA website, the Hawaiian Monk Seal is one of the most endangered marine animals in the world. They are found only in Hawaii and have a population that has been on a steady decline since the 1950’s (about 4% per year.) Work has been done recently to being their numbers up. The NOAA has created programs to foster the seals’ numbers. The Hawaiian Monk Recovery Seal program was designed to respond to a wide range of threats throughout all the islands of Hawaii. Their strategies are to enhance survival of female seals as well as juvenile ones, ensure natural population growth and reduce human-seal interactions, prevent and lessen disease and build on seal health care capacity, and also to administer a recovery program for…

Otariidae or eared seals one of the three groups of pinnipeds and are more known as sea lions or fur seals. The eared seal is adapted to live a semi-aquatic lifestyle, meaning they feed and migrate through water then breed and live on land or ice. They live in subpolar, temperate, and equatorial waters throughout the Pacific and Southern Oceans as well as the southern Indian and Atlantic Oceans. They are absent in the northern Atlantic Ocean.…

One of those creatures is the mighty king of the ocean which is the killer whale. The killer whale blends in with the color of the ocean making it very difficult for the Nerdy Starcat to see and escape. Moreover, the underwater rhinoceros is the main predator to the Nerdy Starcat. It is the fastest swimmer in the ocean according to multiple studies. The Nerdy Starcat may be fast, but the underwater rhinoceros is five times faster. With such speed, the underwater rhinoceros easily gets to and eats the Nerdy Starcat. Lastly, another predator that preys on the Nerdy Starcat is the aqua rabbit. The aqua rabbit is a very poisonous creature in the deep sea. Though it may be slower than the Nerdy Starcat, the aqua rabbit found a way in the last few years to eat the deep sea creature in its sleep. One bite meant that the Nerdy Starcat would die within two minutes. The Nerdy Starcat has an extremely weak immune system and can easily be killed by such poison. Because this poison can only kill the Nerdy Starcat, the aqua rabbit only preys on it. Therefore, the Nerdy Starcat eats many different types of food found in the ocean and is also a meal for other predators in the…

Looking at the chart shown in the results section, it is clear the most frequent behaviors are bark, yell, and yelp. The correlation between these three behaviors is that all of them are vocal behaviors. Beginning with the behavior of barking, barking is a very typical form of communication for seals and revolves around establishing and defending territory and mates (SOURCE). Harbor seals, usually males, will bark at other males in order to create territorial boundaries among themselves. These territorial boundaries are not created in order increase access to food because the diet of the harbor seal consists primarily of fish, which are located only in the water. This means that seals secure territories in order to secure mates. There is a competition between males to acquire mates and reproduce and it is for this reason that it's so important for males to be territorial.…

“Marine debris is typically described as any persistent, manufactured, or processed solid material discarded, disposed of, or abandoned in the marine and coastal environment” (Richard C. Thompson 11). If this is the case, how does marine debris end up in and around the water? According to Kimberly Amaral with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, marine debris can reach the ocean three ways; being flushed down the toilet or washed down the drain, ultimately ending up in the ocean; an object getting carried down the landscape or swept into the sewer by rainfall; or items thrown off a ship, landing directly in the ocean (whoi.edu). There are also three major problems caused by this marine debris ending up…

The rise in temperatures are causing sea levels to rise, taking away multiple habitats around the world that species rely on. Every living organism needs a certain amount of space to carry on their daily lifestyle, eating, hunting, resting, mating, etc., otherwise known as their haul out density; without this the species may be threatened. Specifically, Hawaiian Monk Seals, found on the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, are endangered and facing further decline in population numbers due to the loss of beach area they find shelter…

Seal clubbing is an event that takes place in right off of the Atlantic Ocean in Canada. “The hunt usually opens in March in the “Gulf” areas around the Magdalen Islands and Prince Edward Island. The main hunt on the so-called “front” usually begins in April off the east coast of Newfoundland. Its pretty much over by May.” During this hunt the sealers are aloud to kill three different types of seals, the harp seal, the hooded seal, and the grey seal. The only restriction is with the harp seal. When they are first born harp seals are born with white coats. During this time they are off limits to the killing. Although, this protection does not last long, after around 12 to 14 days of age they lose their white coats and their only protection from being brutally murdered. At this point in time they are fair game to the hunter.…

    8. A sea otter can function or play the role as a keystone predator since they are the ones that help a lot in a food web and the general mammal population. The otters help regulate the population such as urchins which eat kelp. Because sea otters help animals like these, and their population is decreasing, kelp forests will be demolished, affecting the food web and other organisms. Thus, the sea otter’s population decreasing would cause its opposite’s population to increase vastly, ruining the ecosystem.…

Studies have shown the life expectancies of an orca in captivity remain well below the life of a wild counterparts. Industries claim that the achievements in veterinary care and nutrition have made a life of orca far better, but studies prove that the whales act much better in the wild. In 2007, SeaWorld responded to questions asked by KGTV and stated “We have often said that 30 years is a good estimate of average killer whale lifespan as we can exceed that age, as evidence by one of ours, Corky. She is at least 40 and perhaps as old as 42. Biology of Marine Mammals said that female killer whales in their studies group had a mean life expectancy of 31 years and males just 19 years”(Rose). The average whale can live up to 100 years old in the wild. In captivity the average whales life will stand at 19-30 years. However, of the captive whales, only two have passed the age of 40( SeaWorld of Hurt). This means the maximum lifespan of a captive whale has reached only half the years of it’s wild counterparts.…

Those animals are credential to the seals and walruses food. They are the base to the oceans food chain. The impact of climate change in the seas ecosystem shows the reduction in of food for the animals. The change in the reduction of food affects both the seals and the walruses. Walruses tend to dive into the ocean all the way to the bottom. They dive to the bottom to eat clams, snails, crabs, shrimp, and worms (Walrus Latest To Be Threatened By Warming). Diminished sea ice and warmer water decreases plankton, which those animals the walruses feed on need in order to survive. When those animals cannot feed off plankton because they are not existent, the walruses starve and are impacted severely. An adult walrus can eat 200 pounds of clams a day. If the walrus population stays 30 miles inshore, they can over harvest (Walrus Latest To Be Threatened By Warming). The most significant impact of climate change on seals is the loss of Artic ice, which they highly depend on. They need that ice in order to access their food sources. As the ice continues to melt away earlier and earlier each year, more pups are being separated from their mothers prematurely. This results in high mortality rates for baby seals (Mosher). The seals depend on cool air currents to bring plenty of food. When the water becomes warm, the seals struggle to find food on their own. Then, the seal population…
