Hanna Baker's Thirteen Reasons Why
“ Hope you're ready, because I'm about to tell you the story of my life. More specifically, why my life ended. And if you're listening to these tapes, you're one of the reasons why.”(Asher 7) Hanna Baker a girl who commit suicide nearly two weeks ago. Clay Jensen who had a crush in Hanna received the tapes but has no clue why he is on these tapes. In this journal I will be evaluating, visualizing, and predicting. While reading Thirteen Reasons Why I found myself evaluating Hanna Baker when she was talking on the cassette tapes about suicide and the map at the beginning of the book showing the locations of the thirteen encounters. Thirteen people who made her life so horrible that she commit suicide. The person that was most obvious to me was Mr. Porter. Mr. Porter was Hanna’s …show more content…
Cassette three Hanna is in her room and hears a camera clicks outside of her window. Never seeing anyone she believes it is Tyler Down because he owns camera equipment. Tyler could never be proven as the peeping tom. When I would read this I would see Hanna on her bed and the Peeping Tom outside her window on their tip toes reaching up her window to see in. I also visualized Clay siting at the diner. Clay orders the chocolate shake that Hanna recommends. While Clay was at the diner Hanna talked about Zach Dempsey. Zach took all of the anonymous notes out of Hanna’s bag. This harassment sent Hanna over the edge thinking she is worthless. “I sat. And I thought. And the more that I thought, connecting the events in my life, the more my heart collapsed.” (Asher 160) I see Clay sitting on a bar stool at the counter slowly drinking his chocolate shake listening to the cassette tapes looking lost and sad. Visualizing this book made me look at this book in a different way through the characters

I absolutely love how Laurie Halse Anderson is able to easily put herself into the mind-set of a teenager and write in a way that we are able to relate too. Melinda’s words and actions actually sound like something a teen would say or do. Too many times I have been forced to read a book that I am not able to relate to or make connection with in my own life. Contemporary literature, like Speak is a lot easier to for high school students to understand and apply. This is one of the many reasons why I am so interested in reading more books by this writer. I recently checked out the book Winter Girls by the same author and I’m sad to say I do not love it as much as Speak. The summaries and reviews I read online made it sound amazing!…

As a motive of terror, Hitler removed specific races, the mentally impaired, and other attributes that weren’t suited for him and put them in concentration camps. He not only eliminated the human species but also history was lost as well. To begin, every reason Hannah gives for her suicide is because of the actions of someone else. Some examples are the first boy to kiss her, a friend who betrayed her, her “peeping Tom”, and a teacher who could not save her from herself. As these individuals committed acts against her, they had no idea the impact of their action’s or what it would lead her to, but, “When you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re messing with their entire life,” (Asher 201). In addition to this, the other main character Clay was infatuated with Hannah, but because he never got the nerve to talk and get to know her before she was already set on suicide, he could never save her from herself. Furthermore, as a society we never truly realize that even just being too scared to say something could lead to someone else’s peril.…

Everybody has somebody in this world they can share their thoughts and emotions with. Whether it is a best friend, a co-worker, or even God…someone to talk to is sometimes the only cure to the things you are feeling inside. In the novel Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Holden Caulfield’s person to talk to, or “confidante”, is his little sister Phoebe Caulfield. At the beginning of the novel Holden describes Phoebe as extremely smart and funny, but as the book progresses her significance in the work progresses too. Much of Phoebe’s life is used symbolically and vicariously of Holden’s at her age. The most important part of the novel is the closing scene when Phoebe is on the merry-go-round. The three symbols used in this final scene (the rain, Holden’s hunting hat, and the merry-go-round itself) all directly correspond to the overall theme of the book.…

Although Drew was the captain of the football team, a respected leader at Waukee high school, and a friend to many, he suffered from a burden of “loneliness” and “isolation” according to an interview with his parents on the Channel 13 News. Drew was not the only teen to take his own life during this 2015-2016 school year. Luke Anderson, another student who attended the Waukee and Dowling school district, also committed suicide a few months later. Through the devastation and mourning, one may question why suicide occurs, how people can prevent it, and what can be done to provide…

Adolescent suicide has become an epidemic, attempted suicide is even a greater epidemic. “For every adolescent who commits suicide, four hundred teens report attempting suicide, one hundred report requiring medical attention for a suicide attempt, and thirty are hospitalized for a suicide attempt” (David M. Cutler, 2001). Each year in the United States, thousands of adolescents commit suicide. According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suicide is the third leading cause of death between the ages of fifteen to nineteen, and the sixth leading cause of death…

Jay Asher's book 13 Reasons Why is entertaining. His story of Hannah Baker and her feelings is disturbing. The main theme is: 'Think before you act; you could be hurting someone without knowing it' makes me feel depressed. Asher's use of imagery on page 160, "Hannah always looked depressed. The smile on her face never reappeared," supports that theme because it shows that the way people acted really did have a negative effect on Hannah. The tone throughout the book is dark, but sometimes shifts to upsetting to make the reader feel downcast.…
