Handel: Concerto In B Flat
Handel: Concerto in B flat: I. Allegro moderato
In the video, Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) principle Harp Heidi Van Hoesen Gorton performs the initial movement from Handel’s Harp Concerto. The setup is an empty stage at the Harpa Concert hall in Iceland and the harp is the leading role as the melody instrument. Therefore, a beautiful and brilliant musical composition which resonates for one to two seconds is registered.

Heidi is a professional concert harpist and from the harp, she produces a mellow and resonating tone. She achieves this through a combination of notes which from harmonies. Additionally, due to the size and shape of the harp, she is able to produce unusual, resonating soothing music which brings peace, rest

    "Greensleeve" Analysis

    While watching Anna Maria Mendieta play the harp on 5/8/14 at the Mondavi Center, the main composition that caught my attention and triggered my memory was Henry the VIII's "Greensleeve". The first few notes of the piece were already familiar and harmonious to my ears and also to the ears of other people worldwide. "Greensleeve" is a folk composition that was written in 1580, well known during the late Romantic period and early Baroque period, and continues to be of musical prominence today for "its heartfelt melancholic lyrics", "interpretations in the fields of folk and classical music", and for having a melody "so evocative of English countryside". The fact that it is comprised of a simple sequence of chords with a repeating bass shows that it uses a form more familiar with the slow/focused tempo of the Renaissance period, but is also influential to the later, significant ritornello and basso continuo form developed in the Baroque period. The form of the piece also allows for the musician to add their own improvisation, and for the performance I saw, Anna would constantly strum through all the strings scale in a descending and ascending manner in order to portray the dynamics and pure elegance of the harp. Therefore, “Greensleeve” is a prominent and classic composition for its historic eminence, it’s simple, yet influential form, and most importantly, it's soothing, captivating, and iconic rhythm. Many musical pieces we listen to today follow a repetitive verse and chorus form, which is actually the main form that is used in the piece "Greensleeve". Coming from the Renaissance period, where singing was prominent and instrumentation was barely focused on, using this simple and memorable progression is actually common for many pieces during this time.     To introduce the piece two cadenzas inspired by the same melody are performed over a continuous subtle harmony. The piece begins with sustained chords between the string instruments and wind instruments. This gives a relaxed effortless tone to the piece and resembles the calmness and tranquillity of a spring day in England. The violin then enters imitating the lark. The violin plays an ascending pattern with elongated arpeggios. The chords underneath drop out so the violin plays a solo introducing the first theme. The orchestra is quietly introduced and develops the almost folk like motif. A folk dance theme is then introduced led by the clarinet and flute and woodwinds as the solo cadenza is repeated. The full orchestra then comes in however it is still fairly restrained to imitate the English countryside. There is antiphonal exchange between the solo violin playing a trill and then the woodwinds imitating the bird like call. This is followed by the solo violin playing a series of cadenzas over the orchestra which could represent the lark flying over the countryside and rolling hills. The shorter cadenza for the soloist is fairly contrasting in comparison to the rest of the piece. There are two separate melodies competing with one another yet also mimicking each other. There is…
