Did you find the dramatist using different types of tension in the play in order to engage and hold the audience? (How was tension used in Hamlet)?
- (Dramatic Irony) Some characters know and others don’t this allows for many different plots to be going on at the same time during the play. Claudius’s’ claim for the throne, and to be accepted by the state of Denmark, Hamlets revenge under a “(antic disposition)”, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern’s spying to find out the Reason for Hamlets revenge.
- Soliloquys are our only method of understanding and knowing what certain characters are thinking and intentions. (How hamlet is mad and we begin to doubt ourselves which is when tension comes in, When he handles Ophelia roughly).

What for you was the most riveting or satusfyign moment in the play? Can you account for how the playright managed to achieve it?
- Act I Scene I, When the apparition of the ghost first appeared. It was achieved because at the time the religious beliefs of the society where deeply ingrained into the minds of the people. When coupled with a tense relations between Denmark and Norway at the time which directly reflects (mirrors) the situation of Europe at the time. (Cannon fire) Having this knowledge beforehand and making these links left me really satisfied. You can basically imagine how a Elizabethan society would react to this.
Strengths and weaknesses of Hamlet and the effect of these on the play?
- Youthfulness in how he reacts with other characters in the play. Mood swings Expand
- Quest to not kill claudious but to discover the truth prior to avenging his father. Constantly delaying it ( Internal conflict) allowing us to empathise with him Expand
- Ability to play with words and to attack (verbally) those who oppose him. Such as Polonious and R&G. Expand
- Full of contradictions.

Hamlet undergoes many forms of stress throughout the play, and, as a result, his complexities are quite apparent. While some of Hamlet's attributes work in his favour, others, such as his strange relationships with women and ever present insanity, only act to hurt him. Hamlet's studying at Wittenburg also serves to his disadvantage. While attending this progressive school, Hamlet has obviously gained vast amounts of knowledge, as illustrated in his Pyrrhus speech (II:ii:455). A result of Hamlet's advanced education is his desire to obtain proof of Claudius' guilt before he takes action. Rather than act quickly, as was the case with Fortinbras' actions, Hamlet would much rather establish guilt in a (relatively) calm and collected manner. While Hamlet could have easily taken Claudius' life, he instead wrote new lines for the play "The Murder of Gonzago" and stated he would observe Claudius' looks (II:ii:601). A special type of individual is required kin order to develop such a plan, and had Hamlet not been so well educated, he might have acted quickly or without thought. Any critical evaluation of the play “Hamlet” must be chiefly concerned with the character of Hamlet. Unlike Shakespeare’s other tragedies, “Hamlet” is singular in purpose and scope-it is the story of one man’s personal and moral collapse under the weight of his own (and other’s) decisions, intentions and machinations. The play is not complicated with subplots and extraneous secondary characters, but is wholly focused on the man himself. This dedication to a singular dramatic intention paradoxically makes for “Hamlet” to be, subjectively, Shakespeare most confusing play. It is problematic in its protagonists’ inscrutability, his missing motives, his contradictory actions, and his utter implacability to settle into one stable character. Almost everything he does further contradicts him as an individual in the world of the play and as a dramatic character. For this reason my critical evaluation of the play is that it is artistically self defeating due to its own subversions of character and dramatic convention, and this should render it unfulfilling and disappointing as a dramatic performance. Paradoxically, the plays confusion renders it all the more infuriatingly readable-it is both alienating and enticing, a work which defeats itself in its own realisation and at the same time is only worthwhile and meaningful in this artistic enigma-the individual components should not work, yet it does strike a powerful emotional and dramatic resonance in its completion. Many aspects of “Hamlet” as a text are easily criticised-it is certainly a work with a large amount of problems. However, in a rather subversive and mysterious manner the play is a wonderful work of literature.…
