Halloween Informative Speech

Halloween, also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows’ Eve or All Saints’ Eve, is a yearly celebration on the 31st of October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day. It starts the three-day worship of Allhallowtide, the time in the ritualistic year dedicated to remembering the dead. Many scholars believe it is a Christian holiday, however it is widely observed by both Christians and non-Christians. To celebrate, children dress up in costumes and ring stranger’s doorbells soliciting candy, also known as “trick-or-treating.” This originated from poor people visiting wealthier families’ houses. They would receive pastries, called soul cakes, in exchange for a promise to pray for the souls of homeowner’s dead relatives. Today, people visit haunted attractions, watch horror movies, tell scary stories, and play pranks. A family activity is often decorating pumpkins and carving “jack-o’-lanterns,” which are said to represent a “soul who has been denied entry into both heaven and hell.”
Other harvest related treats include candy corn, which mimics the appearance of kernels of corn, as well as pumpkin seeds, bread, and pie. A typical Halloween party game is bobbing for apples, a tradition that dates back to the Roman invasion of Britain. The Romans brought an apple tree, representing the goddess of fruit trees, Pomona. When an apple is sliced in half, the seeds form a pentagram-like shape; this symbolizes that it can determine marriages during this time of year. Young singles try to bite into an apple floating in water; the first person to bite into the apple would be the next one to be allowed to marry. Girls would put the apple they bobbed under their pillows and dream of their future husband. Today, people play it as a drunken display of skill, rather than a matchmaking
