I personally can feel the situation; this piece demonstrates the real situation a bronco’s accurate reaction when encountering a rattlesnake. It does a good job in making the viewer literally hear the bronco neigh. The encounter is intense and the bronze work makes you worry about the cowboy possibly falling of the horse. I truly enjoyed interacting with this piece and making assumption on the unknown, such as what geographical location this occurred in, how exhausted the cowboy and bronco are, and weather or not the cowboy on bronco carry on with their travels without an injury. These open-ended questions make the viewer able to communicate personally with the piece. I believe this piece is truly remarkable when examining the horse. The horse has such great detail, anybody who sees the detail in the horse knows exactly when and how a horse halts and is startled. Hemington shows the bronco’s hind legs flexed strong with muscle tone and veins as the adrenaline in the horse is pumping throughout his massive body. The way the horse is sculpted really talks to the strength of a 1000-pound animal like a bronco. These animals could kill a man just by falling on them, which plays to the severity and intensifies the experience of the viewer. The cowboy has incredibly stiff legs, which makes me feel the sudden halt that made the cowboy flinch his entire body to avoid getting ejected off the horse. The details of the piece paint a very…

Lascaux’s caveart emphasizes the theory of natural selection, polytheism, and art playing a major part in religion. The magdelanians emphasized the theory of natural selection by painting the cross bison fighting. This shows that natural selection was highly important to them whether it was about reproducing or hunting and gathering food. Many archaeologists believe that these people practiced polytheism in a way that their universe: or the stars, moons, and planets were their gods and goddesses. The caveart also depicted a religious ritual or ceremony. The brown bear was only depicted once in the caves, the brown bear commands respect, shows gentleness, and ferocity. The brown bear could have been one of their shaman representations.…

In this work of art, Napoleon is the only character riding a white horse and depicted front and center. All figures are anonymous, except Napoleon himself, who is clearly the subject in this painting and dons an ornate uniform and thick, bright red cape for warmth, unlike the lackluster troops in the background. The horse’s mane, tail and Napoleon’s cape are blown forward by the wind, following the direction in which Napoleon points. Even the wispy clouds in the sky seem to follow Napoleon’s command. The white horse rears as Napoleon points ahead, signaling his troops to charge onward up the winding mountain. In the background, there are approximately fourteen figures, three of which appear to be Napoleon’s soldiers hauling a wooden wagon, or cannon, up the…

In Chapter 5, the work of art that I found most compelling was the cave painting in Lascaux, Dordogne, France, called Hall of Bulls (Page 112). This cave painting was created somewhere between c. 15,000-10,000 BCE. and may have been part of an ancient ritual. I find the detail on this cave painting to be utterly astonishing. I can’t even draw a proper stick figure in Paint and yet these cavemen were painting detailed pictures of running animals. It is amazing to see such a historical piece of art still living to this day on the same wall that the people painted it on. I particularly like the way that the wall’s rough exterior gives life to animals, it is as if they are running in smoke or dust. This is truly an amazing piece of art and hopefully,…

The Running Horned Woman was created in Tassili n’Ajjer, Algeria, circa 6,000-4,000 B.C.E. This is a piece of parietal art, made with various pigments on rock. There is not much known about this area of Algeria, also known as the “Land of Many Rivers,” but historians use the people who inhabit the location today to gain insight on their predecessors. The Tuareg people are nomads, so one can assume that the people who lived before them herded animals as well, residing in groups. This area of the Sahara has massive caves, including the one where this piece was found in. In Running Horned Woman, the artist uses a multitude of elements and principles of art to draw attention to the subject of the painting.…

Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa may very well have saved Major League Baseball. The season after the MLB strike of 1994, attendance and TV ratings were the lowest they had been in over a decade. Baseball needed a way to boost interest and increase the games appeal and more importantly to the league, revenue. And it received that boost in the form of the greatest home run race the game has seen. Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa were pacing their way to history in pursuit of breaking Roger Maris’ single season home run record of 61 home runs that had stood for 37 years. After the 162 game season, McGwire and Sosa finished with 70 and 66 home runs, respectively, and had made a positive impact on the game of baseball. However, it is unlikely that the two men will ever have a place in Cooperstown, New York in the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame because they played in the steroid era (late 1980’s to the late 2000’s) and their admitted steroid use.…

This magnificent painting dates back to Lascaux, France 15,000-13,000 B.C.E. It was found on cave walls and it is said to represent one of the earliest examples of artistic expression. We can see that this piece was created during the Paleolithic period because; they are images walls using paint on limestone. We can see that the primitive people used natural rock contours, which suggested the animal’s volumes and portrayed real representations of a major role in their lives, which were the animals. We can see horses, bulls, deer, cows and more animals on the walls of these caves. Furthermore, the images of the animals are overlapping earlier illustrations; this would suggest that what made the people at the time want to paint the animals was the simple act of portraying them, instead of focusing on the effect that their act would achieve. On the religious part of this piece, we know that several of the paintings were situated far from the entrance of the caves. This type of placement followed by the gigantic size and great importance of them would tell us that the secluded rooms were used for ceremonial and sacred gathering places. I would have to agree with this interpretation due to the fact that it is believed that main use of the caves was for worship and initiation rituals.…

Throughout Ancient History, many different animals are glorified and made “sacred” by cultures, often for religious reasons. We see everything from the ritual burials of cats in Ancient Egypt to the worship of Ganesha, the Elephant goddess of wisdom in Hindu traditions. The Bull is one of these historically revered animals, its use as a sacred symbol seen as far back as the Stone Age. Because it is such a common and useful animal, it was seen again and again in everything from astrology to folklore. Eventually, historical texts show reverence of the Bull reaching into Minoa. The Minoans were fascinated by the Bull, and created myths, symbols and religious ritual to give the Bull praise. One of the ways they did this was through “Bull Leaping”, a ritual in which an individual would stand head to head against a charging bull and proceed to vault over the animal using its own strength against it (Figure 1). Many researchers have attempted to decipher what the ritual meant in context, but ultimately the rituals cultural significance has been lost to the ages. Assumptions have had to been made, and ultimately what is presented might be closer to hypothesized fantasies.…

Our ancestors began to express their creativity and individuality with the first forms of art. The two forms art were mural and portable art. “Mural art is paintings and engravings on the walls of caves” (Price 131). Mural art has been found mostly in France and Spain. The paint used for murals is a combination of minerals and cave water. The main colors are black, yellow, red and sometimes white. The mixture is long lasting as hundreds of murals exist today. Most of the murals that have survived are deep within the caves as oppose to the murals that may have been painted in the entrance of caves. There are several caves that have invaluable collections of mural art. One of them is the cave of Lascaux in France. The murals are mostly of animals, occasionally pregnant. There are few paintings of humans. “Portable art is cravings, figurines and other shaped or decorated pieces that can be moved from place to place (Price 131). Portable art has been found in Europe and most of the Old World. The amount of portable art many be a result of groups of people traveling during different seasons to more accommodating areas during the year. A remarkable example of portable art is from the site Dolni Vestonice. Two representations of the same woman have been found. One is a small ivory plaque and the other is a small carved ivory head of a woman with an asymmetrical face. At this site, “a skeleton of a woman with congenital nerve damage buried under two…
