To start with, I will provide you with some knowledge about the structure of hair. Hair is made up of two basic parts: The follicle, which is the actively growing root or base of a hair containing DNA and living cells, and the shaft, which is a strand of hair compose of a protein called keratin. The shaft is made up of the medulla (the central core of a hair fiber), the cortex (the region of a hair located outside of the medulla containing granules of pigment), and the cuticle (the tough outer covering of a hair composed of overlapping scales). The medulla is different from person to person. Some are continuous, some are fragmented, some aren’t there at all, and some are even doubled. There are also different types of cuticles, including imbricate, which is what humans have, coronal, which is what rodents have, and spinous, which is what animals such as cats have. With a macroscopic view of hair you can see differences in color, length, and where it is curly, wavy, or straight, but that only scratches the surface of what you can see on hair. With a microscopic view you can see the medullary index (the ratio of diameter of the medulla to the diameter of the hair), cuticle type, cortex color, diameter of the hair, and much more.…

Leg hair, armpit hair, and everything else (other than eyebrows and head hair) really, really nasty. Why should girls waste their time shaving their legs and armpits when it could just not grow there. Everyone loves the feeling after you shaved your legs but when they are prickly, you just skip your homework and go straight to taking a shower. Plus, you are also in there for 5 hours just shaving one leg. To make it even worse, the way it looks. It bothers me when you are sitting and you either look at your legs or feel them, and all you see is little gross hairs sticking out of your legs. Body hair should not…

The Guerilla Girls are an elite group of female artists that no one knows the identities to. Not only does no one know the members identities, but also no one knows how to find them. The scary part about it is that if they want to find you, they will. As I said earlier, each member is an artist, and the group formed around 1985 when the New York Museum of Modern Art opened. The museum included an astonishing number of paintings from 169 different artists, but less than 10 percent were women artists. The first action that the Guerilla Girls did was making posters educating the people of inequalities in the art industry. One of their first posters said “WHAT DO THESE ARTIST HAVE IN COMMON,” and then went on to say that they were all male. The Guerilla Girls continued to display posters all over town emphasizing the inequality women face in art. The main targets that the Guerilla Girls attacked were critics, museums, and galleries. All the posters they made included great graphical design and all had a deep meaning. Once the Guerilla Girls started to get noticed they moved into on-site appearances as well as posters. The group would dress in gorilla masks, short skirts, and lacy stockings. Often the Guerilla Girls even waved around bananas. The Guerilla Girls had such a successful campaign that the media ate it up almost instantly. The group was being interviewed and even given the…

There are many definitions of gender in society, and there are reasons for these definitions. I tend to lean towards the more typical definition of gender. I see gender as a way of categorizing people by their actions and or physical appearance. When we talked about gender in class my eyes were opened a little though, and I think that I would like to try to look at gender differently now.…
