Hae Min Lee Summary
Sarah Koenig explores the murder case of Hae Min Lee as an outside reporter and Serial is an account of her process. Many have wondered, Did Adnan really kill Hae Min Lee? It all begins by checking out everyone’s alibi’s and all this leads to even more questions until true facts. Many want to say that her death was a result of Adnan’s and Hae’s breakup that happened a month prior, but outside of Jay’s testimony saying that he still hated and was going to kill her (Hannafin, “Episode 1”); those that interacted with Adnan regularly said he was behaving normal and didn’t see any problems between them. After Hae was missing for three weeks an interesting character, Mr. S, found her inside Leakin Park which is a known body drop location. Although …show more content…
One of these inconsistencies is that Jay stating that Adnan had called and asked him to pick him up from Best Buy and showed him the body there when call logs and cell tower records do not line up between the time frame of 2:15 to 2:36. In the process of investigating, Koenig gets some additional insight and opinions from students at the University of Virginia School of Law and a professional detective. They both agree that there is more to the case than that of which has been presented by the State. Jay, the counter-witness of Adnan’s testimony, provided the strongest witness of the events that could have transpired around the murder of Hae, but evidence suggests that there is a possibility he is lying about what happened to protect himself or the real murderer. Defense attorney Cristina Gutierrez, Adnan’s attorney, is important regarding Adnan’s trial considering her strong personality and argumentative traits. Cristina, some claim due to her illness, lost the case for her client by things such as: the evidence collected from the crime scene never got tested for DNA and was not addressed in court. These are questions apparent after several years, even after the case when Cristina died. With little evidence Adnan should not have been

Usually people don’t think much about murders being convicted and put into jail. If the court decides that someone is guilty of a murder, then you will automatically assume that they’re guilty. Well in the podcast Serial, by Sarah Koenig, a man named Adnan Syed is convicted for the murder of Hae Min Lee. This podcast really makes you start thinking about who really killed Hae. With the evidence in the podcast, I have decided that Adnan is guilty. Adnan killed Hae because the, “neighbor boy” claims that he had seen a body been put into the trunk of a car by Adnan, Nisha put Jay and Adnan together when Adnan was supposed to be somewhere else, and Kathy thinks that Jay’s and Adnan’s behavior was unusual.…

Serial, is a Podcast produced by an investigative journalist and a former reporter for the Baltimore Sun named Sarah Koenig. Serial is a spinoff produced by the WBEZ 91.5 Chicago radio station and This American life. This specific podcast addresses the 1999 case of Adnan Syed vs The State of Maryland. In this case, Adnan is being accused for the murder of his former girlfriend Hae Min Lee. More than fifteen years later, this case once again sparked controversy when aired in 2014 through the podcast. In Serial, reporter Sarah Koenig intended to seek justice for Adnan by portraying him as innocent, which listeners can tell through the three rhetorical appeals; ethos, pathos and logos which she presents throughout the case along with interviews, evidence and personal statements.…

Police coaching is also believed to have taken place during the questioning of Jay. Within the police files, there is a document labeled ‘Jays Crinology’ and a few maps that show where cell towers are located and pinged throughout the day of the event. The document referring to what Jay’s activities is a numbered list with twenty four events that took place on the day of Hae’s disappearance. It is believed that the police were helping Jay remember the points on that list by reminding him about details that he forgot about. For example, detective McGillivray sighs of exasperation and points out that Jay and Adnan have both Hae’s car and Adnan’s car at one point in time, and Jay forgets about the detail of still having both cars. Jay says, “We…

The next day she goes to the cops and tells them that Jay told her Adnan killed Hae. On February 28, Jay gets interviewed by detectives, he tells them everything he knows; how Adnan showed him the body and then leads them to Hae’s car, this proves that Jay was at the scene. But Jay's story changes, the next time he is asked by the detectives he admits to assisting Adnan with burying the body, he later tells Jenn that he needs to clean up the shovels and that he needs her help. These inconsistencies make it hard to believe that he is a solid witness, he doesn't change his story once but multiple times. He tells the Cops that he is sure the murder happened at the Best Buy parking lot and that Adnan later called him from a payphone there, he draws detectives a map of the location of the payphone but when you look through the blueprints and ask the primary and recent owners, no one has ever seen a payphone outside at the parking lot. Before we go any further we need to know the time of the murder, the state's timeline is from 2:15-3:30 pm, this is when Adnan went from Woodlawn High school to Best Buy and between all this still had time to kill Hae, the problem with this is that it's nearly impossible. Investigators Sarah and Dana tested the State's timeline, they accounted for the traffic of getting out of…

Going on Jay wilds, he confessed to help Adnan bury the body in one of his recorded police interviews but in another story by Jen, Jay had claimed that he didn't help bury the body but had no sentencing for helping and knowing about the burying plus the murder of Hae. The body was found in Leakin Park it is a widely known wooded area to dump bodies. Jay had known where Hae's car was but not the body when he claimed to the police he helped bury it but to Jen he didn't help Adnan at all. Also Jay was seen disposing his clothes by another witness Jen but then claims he didn't help Adnan at all but why get rid of the clothes that he was wearing. When Jay was being questioned by police the tapes recorded weren't turned on right when Jay got in the room it took police 45 minutes to get the tapes rolling so what happened in that chunk of time? Jay had cut a deal with the police giving false information in exchange not to bust him for the drug dealing and other crimes he had committed. The state had an out with Jay and they took it causing stories to change to match up to what the police needed to arrest Adnan. The police had ran out of suspects the only one that was left was Adnan and they had to put someone behind bars so the department did not look…

On February 25, 2000 Adnan Syed’s world came crumbling down around him. Adnan was convicted to life plus thirty years for the murder of his high school ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee. Although Adnan was convicted, he is not guilty. The prosecution's case was shaky and was built around one witnesses constantly changing testimony. The witness was Jay Wilds, the neighbourhood drug dealer and a former schoolmate of Adnan’s. As well as the prosecution's main witness being unreliable, the cell phone tower data that they used to convict Adnan says on the cover sheet that the cell phone data from incoming calls can't be used to reliably and precisely locate a cell phone. Lastly, the autopsy report of Hae Min Lee showed fixed frontal lividity, the phenomenon…

The reason the other side believes Adnan is guilty is because of one person; no, not Adnan himself; Jay, who says Adnan told him he was going to kill Hae. More importantly, Jay himself says that Adnan showed Hae’s body to him, as put: “I noticed that Hae wasn't with him. I parked next to him. He asked me to get out the car. I get out the car. He asks me, am I ready for this? And I say, ready for what?” And he takes the keys. He opens the trunk. And all I can see is Hae's lips are all blue, and she's pretzeled up in the back of the trunk. And she's dead.” (Episode I, Page 10). Jay is claiming to have been shown the body of Hae, and he is placing Adnan at the very scene of the crime. How believable is Jay, because according to Sarah and Bill Ritz, Jay’s story repeatedly keeps on changing. Sarah explains to the audience, “I put it to Bill Ritz when I talked to him briefly on the phone. Jay's story kept changing. You were catching the inconsistencies and he was having to explain them and clean up his story. So what ultimately made you believe him? Ritz said they believed Jay's story because “we were able to investigate and corroborate what he was saying.” (Episode 4, Page 68). Jay’s inaccuracies are either due the the fact that he…

    The Adnan Syed Case

Adnan was formally interviewed much sooner than six weeks after the fact. Lying about Hae needing to get back together with him is maybe the most chilling. This was a falsehood Adnan told the school nurse on the day the news broke that Hae's body had been found. He claimed to have addressed Hae the prior night she vanished and told the nurse that Hae "had wanted to get back together with him, that she still loved him, but that he didn’t want to get back into the relationship in that manner— that they would always be friends." (Source trial testimony of the nurse: http://postimg.org/picture/wz59tmc2p/) Given what we know of the telephone log from the night prior to the homicide, and the short discussion that Adnan had that AM with Hae, this does not seem to be accurate by any means. What is frightening is that it sounds all that much like what Hae likely let him know in the car just before he strangled her. There are obviously other accusing lies. Lying about requesting Hae for a ride on the day of the homicide (saw by two separate tenable witnesses and confirmed by Adnan to a cop that day). Lying about his car being occupied when requesting the ride. Lying about how he wasn't troubled by their breakup. Lying about where he was and it was not coordinating up with cell tower evidence, and taking from the group Mosque…

In Serial, Adnan is betrayed by those around him and falsely convicted for the murder of Hae Min Lee, showing that Adnan should deserve a retrial. First, the police interrogates Jay a lot. One of the days Jay was interrogated, 3 hours of the interrogation was not recorded. Jay has something new to say every time with a different version of a story. In this 3 hours Jay probably had said many things. In those stories there might have been crucial amount of info that could have helped but was not recorded. Second, the prosecutor maybe turned on Adnan and helping Jay. A question sparked people's attention when Jay was asked how he attained a lawyer. It was strange about how he attained a lawyer. Jay claimed he was not allowed to get one until…

Hae was loved by many, she was beautiful, intelligent and outgoing, so who would want to kill her? Like many cases, the attention turned to her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed. Much attention has been brought to the case of The State v. Adnan Syed. From that attention came the Podcasts Serial and then Undisclosed. While the podcasts are told by different people and have different concepts, they both bring attention to wanting to know the truth. On of the pieces of the case is the Testimony told by Jay Wild’s, an acquaintance of Adnan, which has many inconsistencies and lacks credibility.…

Adnan is in jail and knowing that he may or may not have done it, but Jay changed his story over and over, and Adnan said the same story and didn't change anything and when he thought of something he told them what he remembered. When someone asked Jay if he said something that he said before he would say that he didn't say that, which he did he changed his story to make him look innocent when he probably isn't. Jay should of got sometime in jail instead of no time because they didn't even think of when he helped Adnan dig the hole they didn't ask Adnan if he helped him or not they just went off of what Jay said and what Jay said probably isn't right.…
