Hadrea Break Short Story
After a tumultuous past, eighteen year old Adrian Luz attends Yale University. He figures he can start fresh. At a fraternity party his roommate Mario drags him to, he meets Hadrea Verga. He tells her his secret-that he is the son of a televangelist preacher who physically abused him.

They start dating and for thanksgiving, he visits her grandmother’s house. The occult relics and behavior of the other guests are peculiar, but he ignores the eerie sense he gets. That night he notices a spell book, a hexagram and a cluster of the guest as they congregate in a room. He hears chants coming from that room as he makes love with her.

The next morning he sees shadows and hears audible voices who ask him to let them in. The hallucinations worsens and he makes a scene in class the following Monday morning. Afterwards, Hadrea

He grows angry with Hadrea believing she is responsible since she is the only one who knows his secret. When he confronts her, she mocks him.

His friends accuse Hadrea of being a demented witch after overhearing her boast of hexing him. He does not think her hex could have a real effect on him and disregards their warning.

Meanwhile, another one of his peers exhibits symptoms of demonic possession. Hadrea has a romantic history with him as well. When he hears of the guy’s exorcism at the local church, he goes to observe. The demon manifests through his peer in a violent way. The pastor fails to exorcise him, the church burns and the police take him to a ward. The failed exorcism strengthens his skepticism.

The next morning he receives a call from his father that he wants to meet him at a cafe. At the cafe, his father brags of murdering his mother as revenge for the scandal.

During finals, with the loss of his mother his depression deepens. He overdoses on antidepressants. Mario discovers him unconscious on floor of the dorm and rushes him to the hospital where he goes into a

    The novel follows several characters including brother man and Minette, Girlie and Papacita, Jesmina, Cordelia and Tad. Brother man is the village’s healing man but some of the villagers do not believe in what he does. Girlie and Papacita are in an abusive relationship and they both suffer greatly from it. Papacita however is out till late hours of the night making deal with men for setting them up with girls. Jesmina has been taking care of Cordelia because she has been sick but once brother man comes and places his hand on her and prays, she begins to recover back to full health.
