HCSO Core Values Essay
Welcome to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Training Academy – B1-2016! Let the Staff be the first to congratulate you on this new and exciting time in your life! You are beginning a career that is both challenging and rewarding. At the end of this course you will be charged with providing law and order in our society, as Peace Officers. Furthermore, as a Peace Officer you will be entrusted with an incredible amount of authority and responsibility. Therefore, it is essential you exemplify high moral character and begin to live by the HCSO Core Values.
Our program places a heavy emphasis on professionalism and integrity in every subject matter area and therefore you will receive a strong foundation in accountability, leadership, and ethics. It is essential to take this time to consider the great benefits of making ethical decisions. We strongly encourage you to be self-confident, highly disciplined and show courage during your time at the Academy. While in the Academy, you can expect to study every night and should seek time to practice the things taught during the Basic Peace Officer Course. Also, you are expected to maintain a high level of physical fitness and physical endurance during the Academy. You will be held accountable and will show proficiency in all areas of instruction. Our staff is motivated by excellence in all that we do and we demand nothing less from you.
This Basic Police Officer Course at the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Training Academy is designed to prepare you for the important role you will play in the community. This course will demand both mental and physical aptitude. We ensure we have provided a disciplined, balanced environment and afforded every opportunity for you to be successful. The expectations during this Course are high and uncompromising. This course is not intended to make you achieve total failure but designed to create a setting suitable for you to learn and grow.     The Process of the implementing a field training officer program into the law enforcement system is a simply a good idea. It gives the new officers in depth training period that accompanies the training that they receive in the academy. The FTO program is normally put into place at the conclusion of a new officers training right before they are a solo beat officer. The training on average last anywhere from fourteen weeks to twenty weeks of more intensive on the job training along with a performance evaluation each day. Until the new officer is completed with their training they will be accompanied by their Field Training Officer and/or the training sergeants anytime that they are on duty. Field Training Officers have dual responsibilities in additions to their regular police duties. They are responsible for training and evaluations of the new officer to go along with being on their assigned beats. The Officers being evaluated are required to meet upwards to 30 performance categories that they need to be meet before solo duty is approved. Officers that meet the standards at the end of the program are then recommended for retention as permanent employees and those that do not meet the requirements are either extended their probationary period or terminate employment with the department.…
