Gym Workout Analysis
My morning workout on February 16 started off with 10 minutes of spinning for the cardio part of my workout, followed by an abs workout consisting of sit-ups, leg raises, crunches, ins-and-outs, twists, oblique v-ups and heels-to-the-heavens. After I transitioned to the upper body part of my workout, where I used gym equipment for bench presses, shoulder presses, halfway and full curls, standing tricep extensions, and shoulder kettle bell presses in addition to pushups and tricep dips. These three sets were repeated another two times before finishing off my workout with a cool down and a stretch. The workout left me feeling energized, awake, happy and strong. Gersham Tennant, the instructor of the body sculpting class led the group through a series of upper body exercises, leg exercises, abs exercises and a concluding stretch all in a single hour session. The body sculpting class at Pantera Fitness was truly a great workout experience in a group fitness setting. The group fitness setting allowed me to work to my maximum potential from the combined intensity not just from the instructor, but from the other participants as well. Working out in a group has numerous benefits. In addition to the health benefits alike those of other forms of activity, group fitness increases motivation and consistency of the participant while instructors display a variety of different exercises and fixing participants’ form. Unlike personal fitness, group fitness classes are often composed of several dedicated and frequent participants, headed by a passionate, enthusiastic and encouraging instructor. Both the participants and the instructor contribute to a more intense atmosphere, allowing all members to perform at a higher level. Enjoyable group fitness classes like Pantera Fitness’ body sculpting class provide multiple sessions each week, allowing people to continue to attend the classes on a consistent basis. Group fitness also has the benefit of being an “active” form of exercise in contrast to simply more “passive” types of exercise, such as working out independently, or going for a jog. For those who seemingly have trouble committing to regular activity, it is often tough to regularly motivate oneself to walking out the door and going to the gym. Group fitness can increase commitment for all participants. The leader of group fitness classes are often well-experienced, and are able to help others correct their form to prevent injury while increasing their workout performance, allowing participants to work at their maximum ability.     As I cautiously entered the room, somehow magnified by the humungous weight training equipment and the bustling crowd of students, I was more than just a little apprehensive. I was nervous about this personal fitness program and the posters of athletes with gigantic muscles and beads of perspiration running down their face, certainly didn't help calm my nerves and rising heartbeat. I was soon to realize that enrolling in this course was one of the best choices I had made all year, in regards to me developing both mentally and physically. It took just two weeks for me to realize that everyone else in the class was just as nervous as myself, it was quite impossible to end up looking like a wrestler in less than a year and the benefits of this increased fitness program were indeed numerous. I had never planned on the benefits of running influencing me in other aspects of life. I knew I loved the feeling of simply moving across the ground and being in control of the entire effort. Running allowed me to gain a renewed sense of energy, determination, motivation and concentration that I was able to apply in a practical sense, to my academics, extra curricular activities and sports. It also improved my cardiovascular system and decreased my resting heartbeat. In addition, I discovered the "runner's high" during this time and it has helped me maintain a positive outlook and cope better with stress. However, running is not the only activity I managed to benefit from these past two weeks. All the cardiovascular, strength, endurance and flexibility tests we endured were a lot of fun and allowed me an opportunity to set safe, yet challenging goals for myself in order to improve upon my personal fitness. It also made me realize that my results were personal as they applied to the strengths and weaknesses of my body and the only person I could compete against was myself.
