A brief biography:
The acclaimed Australian poet Gwen Harwood was born Gwendoline Nessie Foster in Taringa, Queensland, Australia on June 8, 1920. She spent her early childhood near Mitchelton, then a rural area but now part of greater Brisbane. Harwood grew up in a loving family, where she was immersed in music, philosophy, language and religion throughout her childhood. She graduated from Brisbane Girls Grammar in 1937, where her teachers described her "undistinguishable in everything, except music and poetry." Harwood dreamed of a career as a concert pianist, even auditioning at one stage for the great Arthur Rubinstein, who was disinterested by her performance. In 1943, she moved to Tasmania, where she and her husband, Frank William Harwood, a linguist, raised four children. In 1985, Harwood was treated for breast cancer, which catalysed her writing of Bone Scan, a work that earned her the Victorian Premier's Literary Awards Prize for poetry. Throughout her career, Harwood went on to achieve many notable awards, earning her a reputation as one of Australia's great poets and inclusion into the Australian literary canon. Her first volume of poetry was published in 1963, and she continued to write until just before her death. Harwood tragically lost her fight of breast cancer in 1995, passing at the age of 75.

A discussion of the significant features of the poet’s context: Like all poets, there can be no doubt that Harwood’s work was a direct result of her own contextual experiences. One unique characteristic of Harwood’s poetry was that she did not accurately date her work. As a result, a consideration of context must approximate what was taking place at the time of writing. Although she began writing her poetry in 1950, it can be assumed that 'Suburban Sonnet' was written at some point in the 1960s.
