Gunpowder: The Invention Of Squeeze Collapse
Throughout history, great world structures depended on the extraction of mined materials. Early civilizations depended upon sheer labor to extract these materials. This was shown to be very labor and time intensive. Especially early on when stone tools were the only thing available. The solution to this problem came in the late 1800s with the invention of dynamite.
Gunpowder is considered the first explosive to be discovered. It was first discovered many years ago in China and India. Early uses of gunpowder were primarily for military use but didn’t see wide spread until the 16th century. Due to gunpowder being a low explosive it was not used for much mining related activities.
Nitroglycerin was the first industrial explosive. It was first discovered in 1847 by chemist Ascanio Sobrero. It was a much stronger explosive compared to black powder, but due to it being very sensitive it was not practical to use in a mining operation. It is, however, the main component to dynamite.
Dynamite was the first safely manageable explosive that was stronger than black powder. It was discovered in 1867 by Alfred Nobel. Dynamite combines the highly explosive nitroglycerin with stabilizing materials to make the nitroglycerin not extremely shock-sensitive. It still remained as a very strong

For example, a very common modern explosive is ANFO which is made with ammonium nitrate. The ammonium nitrate in the ANFO acts as both the oxidizing agent and the absorbent for the fuel. ANFO is considered a high explosive and needs a larger quantity of secondary explosives to prime it like dynamite. One disadvantage of ammonium nitrate is that is hygroscopic making it very acceptable to water interferences and cannot be loaded in standing water. Instead, either a liner is placed in the borehole or another water-resistant explosive is used. ANFO is still considered to be one of the most widely used industrial

This was invented in 1886 and fired smokeless cartridges. However, it had a very big practical design flaw; it had to be loaded in a nose to tail fashion. One of these inventions was the modern hand grenade, this was invented a few months before the war by English inventor Marten Hale. The grenade was very popular in world war one because of the popularity of trench warfare. Another thing that was invented before or during the war was poison gas, chemical warfare was very popular in the World War and gases were used mainly to clear large groups of men from a small part of trench quickly. The French first used tear gas in 1914, they filled small amounts in grenades and threw them in enemy trenches. Later in the war the French and Germans developed chlorine and mustard gas which was more effective and used them in larger quantities against more…

The Germans used it first on April 22, 1915 by opening 168 tons of chlorine gas. This gas was heavier than air which meant it stayed near the ground and anyone who would breathe is suffocated immediately (Wikipedia). Another type was mustard gas and this was the most deadly kind because gas masks could not stop it. It penetrated the clothing and burned the skin. During the whole war, gas killed more than 700,000 troops on both sides. Eventually, they stopped the use of gas in 1925 and it was not used in World War II because Hitler got temporarily blinded by it…

In 1497, King Manuel ordered Vasco da Gama to go on an expedition in East Asia. The journey is a prime example, which demonstrated how gunpowder transformed Europe. His use of gunpowder allowed him to set forceful deals with other nations after destroying their navies with superior cannons and boats. Even though China invented an early version of the powder, they neglected the improvement of it, as they believed it was noisy, cheap and dirty business. It was the Europeans who found success with gunpowder.…
