Gun Control Laws- Is it too late?

Gun Control Laws- Is it too late? Over the last year, I have been concerned over the events that have been shaking the foundation of this country, young kids going on a rampant killing spree and some even taking their own life. Violence has taken over our schools, our streets and the government does not seem to get a grip of control over the situation, promises in political campaigns, and after elections, we do not see a difference. In 2012, this country ended a difficult year with the Sandy Hook Elementary School Massacre, where 26 innocent lives were lost as a result of a maniac armed with his mother’s gun.
After reading articles in the news and listened to the opinions of government officials and gun owners expressing the pros and cons of putting more restrictions to obtain a license or to buy a gun, and it is repulsive to me that this gun owners are looking after their interests and not being conscientious about all the lives lost as a consequence of guns being on the wrong hands. In this essay I would like to express not only my opinion based on my research but to request that there is something done to prevent losing more innocent people’s lives.
According to a study performed in 2001, researchers at Harvard University found some amazing results after the more restricted Gun Laws were put in effect in Australia; in the 18 years before the new law was enacted; a total of 13 gun attacks had led to four or more fatalities. In the 16 years since the new law, the number was zero. Individual homicides involving guns have also fallen. As a Country we should be embarrassed by seeing that there is a positive effect in restricting the Gun use and permitting, and because of politics and other strings that are pulled

by the wealthy people that do not want to go thru a hassle to buy a gun for their

With the growing number of mass shootings in America and violence around the world, the issue of gun control reform has been widely debated across all political parties. The arguments against reform almost always boil down to citing the constitution's second amendment; the right for citizens to keep and bear arms, whereas proponents of reform suggest the installment of new laws ranging anywhere to a simple mental screening before a person is given a license to complete withdrawal and ban on any form of assault weapons and guns, citing that it is far too easy for an individual to purchase a weapon and ammunition and then proceed to shoot middle school students and their teachers. In any case the topic is more complicated than either side will…

Guns started in China about one thousand years ago, but have been evolved in order to be more efficient in the amount and quality of ammunition shot as well as the accuracy and power of the guns. Gun use in America began when the nation was first colonized. The purpose of the guns were to help the colonists with gathering pelts and food, and defending them from attacks. Older guns were equipped with ammunition that was loaded into the gun from the muzzle, giving them their nickname muzzle loaders, and the hammer on the gun struck a flash pan that held gunpowder. These guns, known as muskets, have since been upgraded enough to have more advanced guns such as a Mossberg five hundred or an AR fifteen.…

Americans seem to have a love for guns. In the United States gun ownership and gun control are huge political and social issues. Although there are many Americans that would argue that guns ownership is wrong and that there should be stricter gun control laws in the country, there are many more that believe the opposite to be true. The United States, with less than 5 percent of the world’s population, has about 35–50 percent of the world’s civilian-owned guns, according to a report by the Switzerland-based Small Arms Survey, it ranks number one in firearms per capita. The United States also has the highest homicide-by-firearm rate among the world’s most developed nations (Masters). If this is true, then why the fascination for guns in the…

EN 111 4/16/13 "Don 't shoot! I 'm not armed!" Many have heard the saying, “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people,” then on December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza, fatally shot twenty children and six adult staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the small town of Newtown, Connecticut. Ever since this tragic day, there has been a large push for gun control in the US, led by President Obama. The bills that are before Congress would make penalties for buying guns illegally more onerous, address trafficking, and greatly expand the number of gun sales covered by background checks. These laws might make us all feel safer as well as make us feel like we have control over the “bad guys” but at the end of the day, these new laws will not stop what we all want to have stopped, and that is violence.…

James Holmes and the Aurora theater. Twelve people shot dead and seventy others wounded. This lunatic did it with a legally owned gun. Gun control for the public must be stricter and this should be good enough reason as to why it should. Had that gun not been obtained legally, and the purchase never happened because the purchaser failed the background check, then maybe the shooting wouldn’t have happened. The United States failed to take action regarding gun laws after a mass shooting occurred in their country, where Australia did not. Their tragedy occurred in 1996 at Port Arthur in Tasmania, The dead reached 35, with more than 20 others injured. The victims included children, teens, adults, seniors, tourists and local workers. The tragedy caused an explosion of public outrage, which led to demands for better regulation of guns. Australia changed their laws. As a result, gun deaths in Australia have dropped by two-thirds, and they have never had another mass shooting since. When will the US learn from Australia?…

Gun control has long been a contentious issue in the United States, but in more recent decades, it’s a topic that seems to gather the most attention in the aftermath of mass shootings. Unfortunately, 2012 featured two very notable such incidents, with Sandy Hook being the second-most deadly in American history. Add in the fact that 20 of these victims were elementary school aged children, and it’s no surprise that the push for reformed gun legislation seems stronger than ever. There’s an enormous amount of debate being had within our society, and it’s virtually impossible to turn on the TV or go online without being exposed to the ideas and opinions of government officials, national organizations, or citizens regarding gun laws. No matter where they stand on the issue, too many people participating in the debate are spitting out “facts” that simply are not true. And the continued spread of this false information is not helping the country get any closer to the ultimate goal of less senseless acts of violence.…
