Gun control is among the most highly debated topics today. Federal government is currently discussing whether to initiate stronger and stricter laws for owning guns. The debate over the issue of whether or not American citizens have the undisputed rights to bear arms is a controversy that has been brought up many times dating back to the late 1800s. Activist on both sides of the gun control issues have numerous reasons to support both sides of the issues. The controversial of gun control connects with topics related to the Second Amendment, the crime rate, The Brady Handgun Violence Protection Act, and personal protection. Gun controls concerns the government with regulation of the use of guns and ownership by private citizens. Democrats are the main one who thinks the United States needs gun control. Most Democrats believe that gun control would reduce the number of accidents related to the guns as well as the violence. However, most republicans believes that it is against which gives the right for citizens to bear arms, according to the Constitution of the United States of America.
One of the principal arguments of gun control is the meaning of the Second Amendments of the Constitution which mention “ A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed” ( Gun Control, 2006). Citizens have been debating for several years about the meaning and the purpose of what the Second Amendment is. To the Republicans, this amendment means that citizens have the right to carry a gun regardless if it an automatic machine gun at all times without any questions. The Democrats argue that the Constitution states that people may only carry guns for their self-protection.
There are several different opinion about the Second Amendment. The pro-gun lobby and the National Rifle Association(NRA), because it would harm the Constitution and a fundamental right of the citizens to keep their right is guaranteed by the Second Amendment and by restricting this amendment would basically y mean being denied one of their fundamental rights. Advocates of gun control thinks that in the 21st century of the Second Amendment is not appropriate anymore and that citizens don’t need guns in the same manners as needed when the Constitution was written.
Another principal argument of gun control is gun violence in America, according to research is at all-time high with reported shooting happening every day across the country and recently involving innocent children. Recent school shooting such as Sandy Hook Elementary have brought gun regulation to the forefront once again. Gun violence has impacted the lives of many innocent individuals due to the facts that many citizens see guns as an extension to their life instead of what the Second Amendment meant to be used as, which is protection when an imminent danger. Recent schools shooting across the nation have left government scrambling to find ways to protect innocent bystanders. Gun control is most highly affected by public opinion and the desires of interest groups than other issues area. The first gun law was in 1909. It was called the Sullivan Law. This law mandated a permit for the private possession of handguns. After that gun law control remained unchanged for another long period of time until the Clinton Administration persuaded Congress to pass another gun law in 1993 and 1994. The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act also referred to as The Brady Bill established a five day waiting period for purchasing guns, allowing a background check to be made on the gun buyer. This act has been raising questions about being held not constitution in violation of the tenth amendment because it involved the Federal Government ordering local officials to Federal policy. The second measure, The Assault Weapons Ban, banned nineteen types of automatic weapons. Congress has since repealed that law. Gun control policy is currently...
