Guns On Campus
Ever since school shootings on campuses many people have been skeptical about guns in the wrong hands of people. David Burnett writer of "Students Should Have the Right to Carry Guns on College Campuses.", agrees with the fact that students should be allowed to have guns on campus, for the use of self defense, for decreasing the crimes committed, and because colleges aren’t as safe as you think. Although Darby Dickerson writer of "Students Should Not Be Allowed to Carry Guns on College Campuses.", is on the other side arguing that concealed carry laws increased violence on college campuses, guns on campus lead to bad accidents and homicide, and that even though college kids are mature enough to have guns their brains are still developing.
The thought that concealed weapons decrease crime is a very important issue to students being allowed to have guns on campus. Schools that allowed concealed carry had a decrease in crime over the years. Burnett states, that Colorado State University allowed concealed carry on campus without any problems, and it resulted in a decrease of their crime rate from 800 to 200 over the 6 years to 2008 (Students Should Have the Right To). The concealed weapons must have been helping the crime rate stay down in their school. Although the concealed weapons seemed like a good idea Dickerson believes that they should not be allowed, because they would increase the crimes committed. Dickerson explains, that studies done at colleges by the F.B.I conclude that guns were used 54% of the time to inflict violence upon people in 272 different issues. On the other hand would you really want to increase that chance by allowing students to have guns on campus. College students may need the right to defend themselves, but who is to say that they are even mature enough to have their own gun on campus.
