PRO GUN CONTROL

Should gun control be tightened?

1. Controlling firearms would save more lives in schools.

“When Students Pack Heat, the Danger Grows” USA Today, September 28, 2012 http://sks.sirs.com.ai.libproxy.edmc.edu/cgi-bin/hst-article-display?id=SAIPROXY-0-4262&artno=0000345634&type=ART

In May, when University of Colorado students left Boulder for summer break, their campus was gun-free. Last month, they returned to a campus where just about anyone can carry a gun just about anywhere. This misguided change wasn't the university's idea. For 136 years, dating to the days of the Wild West, Colorado's flagship university had kept guns off campus. Then, in 2008, two students and a national group called Students for Concealed Carry challenged the ban, and they eventually prevailed in the state's highest court. That made Colorado one of five states -- Mississippi, Oregon, Utah and Wisconsin are the others -- where public colleges can no longer ban guns on campus. (Wisconsin can still ban them inside buildings.) You don't need a Ph.D. to understand that letting college students pack heat is a recipe for tragedy. More guns on more campuses -- places where binge drinking, drug taking and immature judgment are common -- will undoubtedly cost more lives than they save.

2. Having a law controlling guns would prevent a Sandy Hook type tragedy.

Within hours of the unspeakable massacre of twenty first graders and six teachers and staff members at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Newtown, Connecticut, on Friday, December 14th, bookers for the television networks' Sunday-morning political talk shows hit the phones, trolling for guests.... After Sandy Hook, as after the Columbine horror, in 1999, and the dozens of mass shootings since, many

However, the benefit of having concealed weapons allowed on campus is proven by the fact that 26 colleges and universities, in Utah and in Colorado, a total70 campuses, currently allowing concealed carry on campus have not been a single report of shootouts, accidents or heated conflicts. In fact, rather than causing crime as feared, Colorado State University’s crime rate has declined steadily since allowing concealed carry weapons. Allowing concealed weapons does not increase risk. To the contrary, it presents an advantage; it reduces crime and violence. Statistics and fact repudiate the fallacy that concealed weapons on campus will increase…

Of the 1,649 students surveyed at fifteen public colleges in the Midwest, 78% reported that they did not support the carrying of handguns on college campuses. Most students reported that not only would they not feel safer on campus; they were concerned about the potential for an increased risk of suicides and homicides. Ohio is a part of 49 states that have concealed carry weapons laws and one of 22 states that ban carrying a concealed weapon on a college campus. “I think for the majority of people this (concealed handguns) is not on their radar screen because it is so absurd,” said Amy Thompson, who is a professor in the department of public health at the University of Toledo who led the study. “Why bring guns into the learning environment? When I talk to my students (about concealed carry) they say ‘Are you kidding me? I don’t want a kid sitting next to me in class with a backpack with a gun in it.” Thompson, who is a part of a team of researchers, conducted a survey with the faculty and university presidents to see who supported the concealed carry and who didn’t. “As a public health professor I wanted to look at who is pushing this and is it something that really, truly everyone wants,” she said. College students need to be aware of the value of a concealed carry weapon because a college campus is no different than a small city. Kurt Mueller,…

When you think of Columbine High School and Sandy Hook Elementary School do you think of an average school or do you think of the tragic, mass murders that took place by gunmen? School shootings have started to increase more and more over the last decade, this also rising in colleges across the country. The question has been posed “Should students be allowed to carry a gun on campus?”. As the Constitution states in the Second Amendment, we as Americans, should have the God given right to have a gun to protect themselves from danger. Today’s society is willing to put people’s rights aside to make up for some people’s discomfort of having guns on campus. This is understandable as school shootings happen for people owning guns, but allowing students to carry a gun on campus also allows them to protect themselves and others in a crisis instead of having to wait for campus security or other law officers to show up. Being able to have a gun on campus could help save more lives than banning them. As some states are starting to pass the law allowing students to carry a gun as long as it’s concealed, it is starting many controversies as to whether it is what is best for our states. With many questions coming up with this debate, passing the law would allow students to use their right, protect themselves and others in dangerous situations, and even possibly decrease the opportunities for…

Concealed carry anywhere has been a highly controversial topic for many years. In the back and forth of this heated debate, multiple subcategories have arisen. One of which is whether universities should allow student or staff to carry concealed handguns on campus. This is a strange debate topic because the obvious answer is no. Just a few of the reasons are an increase in crimes of passion, a possible increase in school shootings, and a high risk for robbery and assault.…

(Law Enforcement and Public Protection; Chapter 411. Statutues.legis.state.tx.us) The supporters of the law argue that more guns make us safer. In contrast, the state no longer has requirements for firearm qualification renewals. Adding to the debate; Texas accommodates CHG permits from other states multiplying the potential exposure to gun violence. The Abundance of available alcohol and binge drinking that is considered a “rite of passage” while attending college threatens the public safety of non-gun owners on campuses. Moreover, universities now have the added pressure to keep their investment sound, along with the potential litigation’s a handgun causes if a student feels threatened. Campus Carry Laws Essay

According to a study conducted by John Hopkins University (JHU), campus carry laws are unlikely to bring an end to, or prevent an active shooter situation. In fact, the study revealed that students who are licensed to carry guns are more than likely to cause more deaths and injuries in an active shooter situation. According to the JHU study, an unarmed student will be more likely to disarm an active shooter. Furthermore, the study revealed that over the past 30 years, only 12% of the over 100 mass shootings in the United States on college campuses and elsewhere occurred in “gun free zones”, and only 5% occurred in “gun restricted zones”. The truth of the matter is that in real-life active shooter events are unpredictable, happening quickly using high power firearms to cause maximum damage. Furthermore, there is no pattern or method to the active shooter’s madness, except to cause great harm; therefore, a college student with a handgun are not trained tactically to deal with these type of situations, or any other situation pertaining to the proper use of a handgun. With this said, my concerns are the reckless behavior of college students, from alcohol use, drug use, petty arguments, not to mention anxiety and depression, will these factors potentially result in gun violence. According to JHU, of course, statistics show that guns on college campuses would increase the number of assaults and…

We Don’t Need Guns on College Campus, is an editorial written by USA Today (2015), justifying why college campuses should be free of any firearms. According to a 2014 overview by the National Conference of State Legislatures, twenty states have banned concealed weapons on campus, the twenty-three others have left the decision up for the institutions. The authors support this evidence with the example of a Florida University shooting that took place last year, stating students will not be safer if they are allowed to carry weapons on campus. In the editorial the writers explain the growth of legislations regarding the carrying of concealed firearms on a college campus, the lack of research that supports the legislations, and how others won’t…

After the tragedies that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School, guns have no place in our nation’s schools. allowing college professors to possess guns on campus will only lead to more gun deaths and injuries, not less. Federal and state laws that prohibit guns at schools and pose harsh penalties for gun possession, in contrast, help keep our children and educators safe. College and Universities are generally safe havens from gun violence.…

In the recent years, the shootings as a result of confrontations that have occurred at U.S colleges and universities have led to heated debates on whether students, administrators and professors should be allowed to carry concealed guns or not. Whereas some analysts have continually defended the opinion that guns should be allowed on college and campuses grounds, majority have nullified any single idea of having concealed weapons on campuses as this is a direct threat to the security of everyone around. For the safety of students, bills meant to allow public colleges and universities to allow hidden and loaded guns on campus should not be passed.…

According to Florida, Nine states—Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Oregon, Kansas, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Mississippi, and Texas (starting in 2016)—allow for campus carry (Florida, 2015). Will this help resolve gun violence in schools or will it cause problems? Only time will tell if teachers will be able to reduce violence in school with a loaded gun in their desk. The fear is the possibility of a teacher’s gun, in the hands of an individual with mental issues. There is no real solution until parents and schools focus on the underlying cause of violence, and that is mental…

New England Journal of Medicine researchers Wintemute, Braga, and Kennedy (2011) stated “in 2007, a total number of 12,632 people in the United States were murdered with firearms, and it is estimated that another 48,676 were treated in hospitals for gunshot wounds received In assaults.” One of the main reasons that numbers associated with gun violence are so high is because guns are falling into the hands of people who should not have them. If we can prevent criminals from acquiring guns, we can drastically reduce gun violence. If someone wishes to buy a gun in the United States, he or she will do so in one of two ways. The first method is through a federally licensed dealer; all sales through a licensed dealer are regulated by the government. They are well-documented, and include screenings and background checks. Private-party sales are the second method. They are not illegal, but they are a major problem. They are completely unregulated and undocumented because they can be anonymous and undocumented; private-party sales are the obvious choice for criminals. Wintemute et al. (2011) reported, “Some 85% of all guns used in crimes and then recovered by law-enforcement agencies have been sold at least once by private parties.” This statistic shows that all gun sales should be required to go through a licensed dealer because private sales are unregulated, and they do not require background checks, which is why private sales provide easy access to guns for criminals.…
