On December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza shot and killed his mother in her home in Newtown Connecticut. He then drove to Sandy Hook Elementary school where he shot and killed 20 students ages 6-7 and 6 staff members. Lanza committed suicide as the first emergency responders arrived at the school. This shooting became the second deadliest school shooting in Unites States history following the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting. It is important that America considers increasing gun control to prevent any more violent attacks from people that have an easy access to lethal weapons and unlimited ammunition. More shootings have occurred this past year due to ustable suicidal individuals who have access to weapons such as the weapon Adam Lanza got a hold of. David Wheeler, who lost his son in Newton, Connecticut told a state legislative panel studying gun violence, mental health and school safety that his son died because an individual had access to a weapon that had no place in a home. David Wheeler also stated, “The liberty of any person to own a military-style assault weapon and a high capacity magazine and keep them in their home is second to the right of my son to his life.” Supporters for stricter laws have agreed that there needs to be greater restrictions when it comes to purchasing guns.
