“A Voyage to the Houyhnhnms”

Jonathan Swift uses the metaphors of Gulliver, Pedro, the Houyhnhnms, and the Yahoos in “ A Voyage to the Land of the Houyhnhnms” to satirize humans so that they could realize that to be human, you cannot go to opposite extremes. Swift has characters to represent man as a complete animal (the Yahoos), as well as characters to represent man as wholly rational being (the Houynhnms). The naïve Gulliver is used to show how man is. The last metaphor of Pedro is used to show how a man can be; a balance of logic and emotion that creates a perfect, individual human.

By writing this book, Swift is cleverly mocking and criticizing the men of his time. In the 18th century, Swift’s fellow European men aimed to be completely rational and logical all of the time. Much like the Houyhnhnms, these men would fall into the trap of hubris and their overuse of logic would cause them to lack the important human qualities of emotion and pleasure. Through the Houyhnhnms, Swift shows the dangers of pride. When we first meet the Houyhnhnms through Gulliver’s eyes, their way of life seems to make sense. Gulliver admires different aspects of their life including their governing; they have no laws because why would you do something that isn’t rational? Houyhnhnms also do not argue and do not have any opinions about anything because why would you argue about something that can’t ever be answered? One of the Houyhnhnms’ features that Gulliver admires most is their lack of any language that describes the negative things that are so prominent in human society like evil, lying, jealousy, selfishness, and greed. In order for the Master Horse to say anything close to “lie”, he has to say “the thing which was not”. At this point we may think that Swift is describing humans as they should be. The Houyhnhnms live in a world with logic, friendliness, and order, as well as a world without negativity, war, argument, law,

In “A Modest Proposal”, Swift begins to voice his opinion of Ireland’s poverty and suffering individuals. After reading the first few words, a reader would think Swift has some sympathy for these poor people; however, Swift’s satire ends up having a twist. Swift states, “I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London, that a young healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled.” The reader learns of Swift’s brutal proposal and is blown away at some of the ideas. This statement makes it clear that Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” is a persona in which Swift poses as the narrator.…

The adult reader can easily identify with the ludicrousness of the scene. Politics, rationality and morality do not seem to be compatible in Lilliput. “The Role of Gulliver” by John Brooks Moore argues that “Swift, obviously enough, desires to communicate his own thoughts and passions regarding human beings to the readers of his book” (451). Moore feels that Gulliver is the medium through which Swift is able to comment on the Lilliputian systems of government and electoral processes as a method of commenting on real life scenarios of the same…

Jonathan Swift’s use of satire in his writing of A Modest Proposal allows him to criticize his audience and make his main point without directly stating it. Swift creates a man who appears concerned and sympathetic towards the poor people while still agreeing and identifying with the upper class of Ireland. The reader’s confidence in the speaker quickly diminishes when he reveals his “modest proposal” to eat children in order to effectively reduce poverty and overpopulation. Swift’s main goal in his pamphlet is quite different from the explicit goal of the speaker and so Swift writes a satire in order to get his implicit point across. Swift strategically creates a speaker who initially appears sensitive and trustworthy, however the speaker is not reliable because he is just as illogical and overdramatic as the people that Swift is criticizing.…

Satire means irony. People use satire to expose folly or vice. Interestingly, in Voltaire's Candide and Swift's Gulliver's Travels, they both use satire to express their profound observations. They have some similarities; such as they both criticize the human weakness. They also have many differences between them. In "Candide", Voltarie offers sad themes by jokes and criticism. The story itself presents a distinctive outlook on life through author's satiric tone. Candide's experiences reveal to us that the world is a terrible place. Human beings are born to suffer in this world. On the other hand, Swift has continuously criticized the human race. He has never mentioned one of the good qualities of the human beings. Compare to the Houyhnhnm ? a horse society that the main character Gulliver admires the most, Swift satirizes the bad characters and behaviors of the human beings.…

Swift uses the speaker to personify the Irish aristocrats and English decision makers and reflect what he felt was their attitude towards the peasants. He is mocking their ineptness and inability to resolve the issues with poverty and inequality in Ireland by presenting them with a hyperbolic, ridiculous solution. By Swift giving his speaker such an absurd proposal, he hopes that it could ultimately result in one of his readers, perhaps an important political figure, accepting the severity of the Irish peasants’ plight and actually stepping up to do something about it. Swift is acknowledging that the poor are being treated like animals by the wealthy landowners and aristocrats so he satirically presents them as literally being like animals; suitable to kill, eat and sell by the pound. Contextually, it is worthwhile to remember that in Ireland around this time, people’s attitudes were beginning to change as they started valuing money and the material possessions that come with it more than people, who had become somewhat of a commodity for wealthy land and factory owners. Swift presented people as a literal commodity in his essay.…

In Gulliver’s Travels, Swift uses the yahoo’s behavior to portray the European preoccupation with material goods. In the Houyhnhnm’s country the yahoos are very attached to the brightly colored stones, while the Houyhnhnms on the other hand, have no interest in these stones in the least. The Houyhnhnms cannot begin to understand the yahoo’s preoccupation with finding, retrieving, and hiding the stones, which are found throughout the countryside, sometimes partially buried in the ground. The yahoos will go to great lengths to possess these stones.…

An Irish bishop was forced by Jonathan Swift to say that Gulliver's Travels, "was full of improbable lies, and for his part he hardly believed a word of it." (Brady 1) In a way the bishop was correct as six-inch people, giants, immortal humans, intelligent horses, and deformed creatures, all races presented in Swift's novel, don't exist. Gulliver's Travels, by far, was the most popular, influential, and controversial novel. For nearly three centuries, authors, professors, and critics have tried to fully decipher the purpose and meaning of his farfetched characters. A common conflict many critics arise at when researching or reading Gulliver's Travels is whether to identify it as a novel or a satire. (Knowles 3) The details and characters of the literature can be argued in either way. Whatever the identity of the work, Gulliver's Travels proved to be influential and controversial to the degree that within two weeks of its publication not only did it become, "‘the conversation of the whole town," but was also sold out. The success of a satire is often measured by how well it "awakens thoughtful laughter." Based on this statement, Jonathan Swift's novel, Gulliver's Travels, is very successful as a satire because at a very superficial level, it is quite amusing with its tales of dwarfs and giants; however, when considering the time period in which this book was written and the historical problems of this era, the reader finds himself laughing on another level, realizing the satirizing of the government and humanity that can be found in each of the four books in this novel.…

Looking at the body from new perspectives gives Gulliver a special insight into the body's materiality. When he is relatively small, he can see the minute, ugly details of others' bodies. By looking closely at the body as a material thing and paying attention to what humans do on a daily basis, Swift makes it impossible to look at humans as exclusively spiritual or intellectual beings.…

In Gulliver’s Travel, by Jonathon Swift, the protagonist, Gulliver, meets and interacts with several different kinds of human-like creatures. These creatures greatly vary in stature, some of which are minuscule compared to Gulliver and others that tower over him. While these beings are human-like in appearance and in some of their characteristics, they also show animal-like qualities. Yahoos in the land of the Houyhnhnms are a perfect example of the uncivilized nature in humans. Yahoos are savage, greedy and dishonest hairy humans who are closer to being animals then they are to being humans. The Laputans are humans that show interest in science and mathematics. They show that humans have reason. The Laputans perform science experiments. These experiments require reason and intelligence to perform. The experiments are impractical and useless, but they show human’s reason nonetheless. Jonathon Swift conducts the idea that humans are animals and have reason through the various types of humans encountered throughout the novel.…
