Attempting to win back the late-night market from McDonald’s and Wendy’s, the venerable family dining chain, Denny’s, is revamping its image and menu. From 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., selected restaurants offer rock music, and the wait staff wears jeans and T-shirts instead of black pants and collared shirts. To further appeal to a youth crowd, the menu features sharable items such as seasoned kettle chips, mini-burgers, and Sweet Ride Nachos (tortilla chips smothered in cinnamon sugar, fruit, hot fudge, and whipped cream). Alternative rock bands are paid to drop in and pump up the party scene. Deciding on a makeover to grab late-night business was a no-brainer for Denny’s. Nearly half of its late-night customers are under 24, and about two thirds are male. Most of these customers are not dropping by after work; they are coming from nightclubs or bowling alleys. A trip to Denny’s prolongs the party. Adding to the party scene, Denny’s has coaxed several rock bands to help it concoct late-night snacks. One band dreamed up Bacon Cheeseburger Fries (fries topped with beef, cheese, bacon, and onions). In addition, a new Denny’s Web site features a rock music blog, and the site encourages folks to vote for the rock band that the food chain should adopt by feeding it free while the band tours.
