Guelph-Humbers Conference
The University of Guelph-Humber gave four third-year media students an opportunity of a life time, The chance to travel to New York City.

The conference took place in New York City on March 11th and ran intill the 14th.

Students were asked to look at the conference schedule and develop a one-page presentation proposal that they could present to the forth-year media studies classes next fall.

Kimberley Noble, a media studies professor at Guelph-Humber said the goal was to educate the students about the topics at the conference and present them to the transition to work classes next year.

The four students were excited when they heard about this opportunity; however, many did not think that they would be accepted.

Students attending the conference were able to sign up for media outlet tours that were taking place throughout the conference.

The tours were assigned on a lottery system; students were able to sign up for their top three tours.

Schlote was selected to attend a tour of Democracy now, an independent daily news outlet.

“One thing I valued about them is that they are able to report on what they want. They don’t have to be afraid of the government or of upsetting any sponsors that they have.” Schlote said.

Schlote was not the only student who was able to attend a tour of a media outlet. Media Business Student, Ryan Williams was also selected to tour a media outlet.

“I was selected to tour Buzzfeed! I got to tour the office and visit all the different sectors. It was an amazing experience," William’s Said.

Williams was excited to learn about the different sectors and see how the newsroom operated. One thing he enjoyed at the tour was to see how Buzz feed news sector operated.

“No one sees buzz feed as credible for their news stories and they are trying to change that. They brought a whole new floor directed to news and that was very interesting to me,” Williams

He tells us that even those who have been involved in foreign reporting are uneasy over the developments unfolding online. What he’s saying is that reading or hearing about foreign news on social media is misleading and can most definitely lead to false information, giving more reason for foreign news coverage by reporters. Yet he says that some of the information from the social media may be true, but we need new ways of reporting foreign news. He then gives us his goals for the future. “We need to embrace the present and gear for the future” (10 Goodman). He’s saying that we need to update how we gather information, both foreign and U.S. information, but also how we engage our…

I don’t travel very much at all but my parents managed to send me on the trip as a kind of graduation gift, a great traveling experience and the sightseeing part of the trip was amazing. We went toured all over the city, went to see plays, and visited a lot of famous places. I had only seen New York on TV or in pictures but I loved being able to actually go there. Just watching TV or seeing pictures on a screen cannot compare at all to actually standing at the top of the Rockefeller Center and being able to see all of Manhattan and the surrounding area as far as you can see, the same can be said about Times Square. Going to these two places were some of my favorite things that we did, along with seeing the Blue Man Group, going to Chinatown, and walking up and down Fifth Avenue. I had a great time actually being able to see and experience everything for myself, but there are more reasons as to why I loved that trip so much.…
